Poverty Bay

Anne Witters is the Poverty Bay Women’s Open champion for the fourth time — 25 years after her first Open victory.

The nine-time senior women’s club champion defeated 2023 senior club champion  Lynne Holmberg on the 18th hole of the McFadyen Cup championship 8 in the Emerre and Hathaway-sponsored PB Open tournament on Tuesday.

Witters is something of a sporadic PB Open victor. She first won it in 1998, then again in 2004. Her third title came 14 years ago (2009).

Hastings’ Robyn Orton beat home-course player Debbie Kirkpatrick in the Sandown Salver second 8 final while Putaruru’s Rachel Young defeated Poverty Bay’s Marg Lane in the Awapuni Salver third 8 final.

Scoring was impressive in the 36-hole and 18-hole stableford sections.

Jacqui Rogers, one of a group of Opotiki players in the field, won Division 1 of the 36-hole stableford with an 83-point haul.

Helen Cox, of Hastings, won Division 2 with 78 and local Colleen Skuse won Division 3 with 79.

Poverty Bay’s Noreen Johnson dominated the 18-hole stableford section, racking up 50 points over the two lots of nine holes.

Ross Gibson broke 80 for the first time since December of last year in winning the Division 1 men’s stableford  on Sunday.

“Gibbo” fired 78-12-66, for 42 points, but his victory was a little bittersweet. He needed to par his last hole — the par-3 sixth — to win the lucrative Sunday School jackpot for scoring two or more points on every hole. He made bogey.

Josh Willoughby was in career-best form in winning Division 2 on Sunday with 81-14-67, for 41.

Electrinet Park

A broken driver, gnarly opponent, strong wind  and slick Park greens combined to make Anaru Reedy’s defence of the senior men’s club championship crown a challenge on Sunday.

“It was tough,” Reedy admitted after defeating Dan Collier 3 and 1 in the 36-hole matchplay final.

There was never more than two holes between the pair, who finished the first 18 all-square.

Reedy was forced to use his 3-wood after a screw snapped in his driver while he was trying to tighten it on the first tee after lunch.

The pair were still locked together after trading birdies on the 31st but Collier opened the door on the 32nd to go 1-down and Reedy won the 34th and 35th to close it out.

It was a high-quality final considering the conditions and Reedy praised the efforts of his opponent.

“Dan played real solid.”

The pair are both in action in the Poverty Bay Open which started today.

Steve Phillips won his first club championship title at the Park — defeating Blue Toa 3 and in the 18-hole final.

Phillips was 2-down after three holes but “clawed my way back” to be 2-up at the turn.

He got to 4-up with four to play but Toa wasn’t giving up without a fight and won two holes in a row before Phillips got over the line.

The other two men’s finals are to be played this Sunday. Ian Loffler faces Tom Reynolds in the intermediate final while Pete Tamatea and Shannon Collier will battle it out for the endeavour honours.

She lost the Benson Cup women’s pairs final in a sudden-death playoff the week before, but there was no stopping Di Webb in the Meg Gordon women’s foursomes on Saturday.

Webb and Karen Hay posted net 69 to win.

Another women’s pairs trophy, the Foster Cup, was decided on Sunday.

Jacque Akuhata and Jean Foot won with a combined stableford total of 83.

The Park is in mourning this week following the death of club stalwart Hank Nyenhuis. Condolences from the golfing community to Hank’s family.
