POVERTY BAY

Peter Graham and Willy Mortleman  would like to win the Bryan Cup men’s pairs title without working overtime.

The pair have been involved in four sudden-death battles en route to the final, including last weekend’s semi.

Mortleman slotted a 25-foot birdie putt on the third extra hole to see off Greg Hawea and Ross Chalmers.

It was their third consecutive extra-holes match in the Bryan Cup subsidiary competition which involves the first and second-round losers from the Gisborne Motors Barns-Graham Cup.

Graham and Mortleman were beaten on the 20th in their BG Cup first-round match.

Little did they know more sudden-death drama awaited them in the Bryan Cup — the round of 16 over Collin Jeffrey and Brent Colbert, the quarterfinals against Ross Gibson and Barry Brown and last weekend’’s semis.

Their efforts have earned them a title shot against Cliff Poole and Vance Richardson.

Poole was meant to be playing with another partner only for him to withdraw because of Covid. Richardson was not going to play because of recent hip surgery but relented when Poole rang him.

The pair, who have played in the BG together before, had a tight semifinal tussle with Mark Gemmell and Tim Sherratt last Thursday before getting home on the 18th.

Mortleman capped his Saturday semifinal win by setting the Division 1 pace in the small field that competed in Round 1 of the Dodgshun Cup strokeplay.

Mortleman’s 79 was 10 clear of the next best, Dave Jenkins.

Colin Simpson’s 85 was the low round in Division 2 and Bill Simpson fired 95 to head the Division 3 scoring.

Anne Witters and Marg Colebourne were the gross winners in the silver/bronze women’s 27-hole tournament last week.

Witters won the silver gross with 133 and Colebourne the bronze with 143.

Other section winners were Margot Shanks, Janet Muir, Sue Kemp and Vicki Fraser.
