“Nanny” Maude Brown QSM was farewelled at the weekend but her spirit will remain forever looking over her beloved Patutahi course.

The much-loved matriarch of a whānau of 13 children and dozens of mokopuna, and teacher to a huge number of youngsters, defined the word stalwart when it came to her people, community and sport — particularly golf and netball.

On the fairways, she was a prolific title winner over several decades.

Maude Brown featured prominently in The Gisborne Herald’s Around the Courses and Golf Roundup.

She won everything from club championship titles to mixed pairs crowns to sections at the Aotearoa NZ Māori nationals at which she was a regular participant.

Nanny Maude also played her part in multiple Patuahi wins in the Northern Zone women’s interclub pennants.

Her passion for helping extended off the course in various club roles.

Her influence extended to many.
