POVERTY BAY

Brian “Beaner” Anderson reckons it is over 30 years since he last played in the Barns-Graham Cup.

He’s made his comeback a good one.

Anderson and Stefan Andreassen are among the four pairs still standing in the quest for the coveted BG men’s pairs silverware.

The And-Ands  moved into the quarterfinals with a 3 and 2 win over bottom qualifiers Carl Carmody and a sick Dean Robertson on a challenging Saturday of wet weather soaking an already sodden course.

Of note in this year’s edition of the 72-year-old tournament is how close matches have been in the Cup section. The four quarterfinals went to the  16th hole or beyond.

Andreassen and Anderson’s semifinal opponents are John Van Helden and Richard Owen. JVH justified “letting go” previous partner Stu Harbottle as he and “Chips” Owen beat Murray Parkes and Dave Pirimona

3 and 2.

It was an “Old Boys” battle, with Owen and Parkes having played  club and representative alongside each other for Old Boys and Poverty Bay.

The “teen leftie machine” of Marcus Gray and Zach Rolls advanced to the last four with a

2 and 1 defeat of Glenn Morley and two-time BG winner  Ron Young.

Morley admitted he wasn’t at his best but Gisborne Boys’ High students Gray and Rolls played solidly, including a couple of chip-ins.

If they go on to win the BG, they will easily be the youngest (combined ages) champions in the history of the Gisborne Motors -sponsored competition.

Out to foil that are Lee “Pikey” Hewson and Chris Taewa, who stayed in the title hunt with a 3 and 2 win over fellow “Sunday Schoolers” Bruce Talbot and Tony Battistella.

The Bryan Cup subsidiary is at the quarterfinal stage while the BG Plate finalists have been sorted — Mark Jefferson and Michael Callaghan v Neil Mackie and Paul Mullooly.

ELECTRINET PARK

The wrath of the weather gods was once again unleashed on the Park course, with the closed sign going up on Sunday.

The course was still closed yesterday but it was hoped to have nine holes available today as the water slowly drained away.

The opening two rounds of the Te Kanawa Cup men’s pairs will be played over the first two weekends the course is playable.
