A 38-hole Sunday ended in Te Puia Springs Handicap second 16 glory for Allan White at the East Coast Open.

“Whitey” defeated Poverty Bay clubmate Peter Clayton with a par on the first extra hole in the matchplay final on Sunday arvo.

Earlier, he also needed 19 holes to put away Tolaga Bay's Bruce Yates in the final.

“I was stuffed,” said 2002 King of the Coast champion White, who couldn't recall winning his opening two matches at any previous EC Open, let alone playing four matches at the tournament (a round-robin is often played in the Sunday morning round).

Tom Reynolds gave Electrinet Park a title double with his 4 and 3 win over Patutahi's Tony Green in the Tokomaru Bay Handicap third 16 final.

He joined EC Open champion and Park clubmate Anaru Reedy (see back page story) as a section winner.

The Waipiro Bay Handicap fourth 16 final was an out-of-region affair, with Miramar's Malcolm Yemm beating former Springboks rugby international and Hurricanes player Joggie Viljoen 2 and 1.

Viljoen was one of three ex-internationals at Te Puia. All Black greats Ian Kirkpatrick and Joe Stanley were in the Tikitiki Handicap fifth 16.

The fifth 16 title went to a local. Former Poverty Bay-East Coast representative Tautohe Kupenga sank a 30-foot par putt on the 19th to beat Tolaga Bay's Tim Adamson.

Host club Poverty Bay fell agonisingly short of top honours at the Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay National Teams regional event on Monday.

The PB team of Marg Colebourne, Rochelle Taewa, Marg Lane and Birgitt White finished just one stroke behind Hawke's Bay Golf Club's representatives in the four-ball best-ball net format.

Colebourne and Taewa combined for a net 68 while Lane and White posted 70 for a 138 total — one behind Hawke's Bay.

Mahia is tough in the best of weather conditions.

So when Mother Nature delivers some of her worst, the result can be carnage as proved the case at the Mahia women's open and round 3 of the Poverty Bay women's interclub pennants on Saturday.

A ferocious southerly almost blew the players away.

“You could hardly stand up at times,” said one hardy competitior.

Wairoa's Tina Duncan won the Ray Stevenson Trophy for best overall net.

The host course were comfortable winners of the pennants round, totalling 124 points for the stableford format.

Waikohu and Te Puia Springs were joint second on 116.

Waikohu lead the series on 18 team points, with Te Puia and Mahia on 16.

Was it something in his water bottle? Perhaps.

Whatever it was Pete Koorey was a golfer possessed in the Tuesday veterans' stableford last week.

Koorey blitzed the field with a sensational 76-15-61, for 47 points.

That sort of scoring on the WHS system sharpens the handicap axe.

Koorey's course handicap was slashed by four shots and two days later he carded an Earth-returning 94.

Paul Wellard (38 points), John Collier (39) and Pat Johansen (37) were the weekend competition winners.
