Gisborne ParkWAIKOHU’S Marg Tuapawa picked an appropriate event to burn up the course — the East Coast fire brigades tournament on Sunday. Tuapawa had not broken 100 since a round of 95 at the Hauraki course in October of 2014. She well and truly ended her century-plus scoring run with an aptly sizzling 97-38-59 on a 30-plus-degrees day to win the women’s net.

Tournament organiser Jack Glassford showed he’s still one of the best golfing firefighters around — albeit a retired one — in winning the fire service division gross with 79. Wade Wesche (76) shot lower than that but his 68 was also the best net while Te Puia Springs veteran Nelson Truman (40 points) won the stableford.

The Juken NZ team of Geoff Hill, Anthony Pahina and Rodney Moore won the three-man team stableford with 111 — Pahina contributing 40 points to that total. Dennis Jenkins and Glassford’s combined tally of 79 won the two-man team stableford.

Father and son Ray and Andy Brott, and Truman Collier were the hottest players in the other divisions. Andy posted 84-23-61 to win the men’s C division gross while his dad — a nine-hole golfer at Poverty Bay — won the net with 92-26-66.

Collier piled on the points, 45, to win the women’s stableford. Kani Kingi mixed four birdies with four bogeys in winning the men’s stableford on Saturday with an even-par 72-8-64, for 44 points — his low round at the Park, according to the NZ Golf handicap website.

Jo Kerr, Jack Straker and Wayne McHugh were in top form last week. Kerr won the women’s stableford on the Wednesday with a 3-over 75-8-68, for 41 points. Straker (89-24-65, for 43 points) headed off Wayne McHugh (85-20-65, 43) on countback to win the Tuesday veteran men’s stableford.

Poverty BayAN eagle-3 on the first hole helped Darren Patumaka smile all the way to the bank in Sunday’s competition. Patumaka, who teed off 10, went out in 42 but started his homeward nine holes with a bang. The eagle set up a 2-under par 34 and a round of 76-12-64, for 44 points. It won him the division 1 men’s club stableford and earned him $110 from the “Sunday School” pot.

Mark Norman had to settle for second in the div 1 stableford after posting his best round in many years — 74-9-65, for 43 points — while Bruce Talbot’s 82-16-66, for 42, won division 2.

It took 40-plus points to be in the prizes in last Thursday’s men’s stableford. Brian Hall posted the round of the day — 86-21-65, for 43 points — to win div 2.

PatutahiJENNY Ruru’s dramatic improvement in 2017 has seen her handicap slashed in the latest index change. Ruru has gone from 44.4 to 36.9, thanks to a string of good scores including a stunning 91-41-50 in the voucher tournament on Waitangi Day. Her massive 57-point haul won her the womoen’s stableford while Mo Farmer’s 82-20-62, for 44 points, was the best of the men.

Forty-two points won Wai Koia (men) and Andrea Stills-Hindmarsh (women) the stableford competitions on Sunday. The same points total earned Ray Burgess the honours in the women’s stableford on Tuesday.
