One giant down. One to go.

Thomas Donovan is sharpening his giant-killing axe in anticipation of a titanic battle to decide the senior men’s club championship this weekend.

TD defeated good mate, boss and newly-crowned King of the Country Andrew Higham 1-up in the semifinals on last week — his first-ever win over the prolific Springs senior title winner.

It earned 2013 Gisborne Park senior champion Donovan a date with William Brown, who is eyeing a club championship double, having recently won the senior men’s crown at the Poverty Bay course.

Brown took a contrasting semifinal path. His opponent Wade Wesche defaulted.

Greg Hawea was out on his own in the men’s stableford on Saturday after a career-best round on his home Poverty Bay course.

The international shearer shot 81-15-66, for 42 points, and comfortably won division 2.

A near-ace on the second hole was a 19th-hole talking point of Brad Morgan’s stableford-winning and shootout qualifying performance on Sunday.

Morgan subsequently made two on the second and went on to shoot 76-9-67, for 41 points, to win division 1.

More importantly, after being in danger of slipping off the Andy Abrahams Shootout leaderboard, he leapt up to eighth place and is a certain qualifier for the 19-man final on Sunday, November 14.

Qualifying for the shootout final ends this Sunday. At the moment the bottom qualifying score is 208, with six players sitting on this, including the event sponsor.

A string of eight consecutive pars anchored George Brown’s division 1 stableford-winning 76-7-69, dor 39 points on Saturday.

Other winners over the week were Bill Simpson (37pts), Glenn Morley (37) and Pete Humphreys (37).

Pat Hokianga followed up an impressive round with a brilliant one over the holiday weekend.

Hokianga, hot off a second-round 76 at the King and Queen of the Coast Open the previous weekend, fired 2-over 72 on Sunday, including four birdies and a back nine holes of 1-under 34.

His net 64 fittingly won the senior men’s competition.

Joe Blair had a double helping of weekend success — winning the junior men’s net on Sunday with 82-17-65 and the net on Monday with 84-17-67.

An eagle-3 on the ninth highlighted GlenMcKinnon’s stableford-winning efforts on Sunday.

The Mac Attack reaped 41 points, heading off an in-form Phil Nepia, who was a point back after winning the Tuesday vets’ stableford last week with 39 points.

Their places are safe but there is extra incentive for those at the top of The Power Connections 18 Hole Shootout ladder.

The final of the shootout is on November 6 and the last day to submit a qualifying score is November 3.

Craig Christophers remained in the top qualifying spot as of October 26, with a total of 554 for his four best net scores off the blue tees and four best off the whites.

He is five strokes clear of Matt Henwood (559), with Tom Reynolds third on 567.

Biting at his heels, however, are Steve Phillips (569), Darrel Gregory (570), Anthony Pahina (570), Zane Boyle (571) and Glen McKinnon (571).

The winner of the final will pocket am estimated $500 but if that winner also qualified in the top three, he will collect a bonus $250, so those behind Reynolds have a dangling carrot to get their teeth into.
