ELECTRINET PARK

Te Kanawa Cup glory-seeker Tom Reynolds is playing down his and Darrel Gregory’s chances of filling the coveted silverware in 2023.

The Reynolds-Gregory combo face father and son Anthony and Shaun Pahina in the handicap matchplay final of the Te K men’s pairs  after brushing aside another family duo in the semifinals on Sunday.

Reynolds and Gregory, under the pseudonym Faint Hearted, beat brothers Selwyn and Quentin Peneha (Peneha Power) 4 and 3  to underline their No.1 seeding.

But favourites they are not, Reynolds insists.

“Punga (aka Anthony) and Shaun are the ones to beat,” Reynolds said, mitigating his claim by pointing to Anthony’s record of having won all three trophies associated with the men’s pairs event.

Pahina senior, who won the Te K with Geoff Hill in 2017, wasn’t buying into that.

“I think he’s trying a bit of reverse psychology,” Pahina said, although he did add that Shaun played particularly well in their 2 and 1 semifinal victory over Mike Christophers and Ben Holt.

The Pahinas, whose team name is Feral Crescent Boys, have extra incentive for success.

Together the pair have won the Te Kanawa associated trophies — the Turanganui Cup (for those who do not qualify for the Te K) and the Fletcher Cup (first-round Te K losers). The Te Kanawa itself would complete the treble as a father and son.

One half of the Fletcher Cup final has been confirmed. Steve Phillips and James Witika (5XLs) face the winners of the semi between Dave Harrison and Glen McKinnon (Mac Attack) and Jason Devery and Bailey Matoe (UseLess Chaps).

John Collier Junior and Damian Pilitati (Team Shockers) are in the final of the Turanganui Cup. The final could be Collier v Collier, as John Collier Senior and Duane Mauheni (Angel Eyes) face Paul Wellard and Phil Nepia (Twoopys) in the other semi.

As the Te K reaches its conclusion a lot later than scheduled after the recent rain events, the men’s club championships are about to get into full flow.

Daniel Collier is top seed in the 10-man senior division. His qualifying score of 74 won on countback from reigning champion Anaru Reedy, Tony Akroyd and Silas Brown.

These four, along with Zane Boyle and Sel Peneha, went directly to the quarterfinals.

Mike Christophers qualified No.1 in the  intermediate division on countback from Tom Reynolds after both posted 80s.

The junior field was the biggest for many years  — so much so the handicap cut-off was reduced to create an eight-man endeavour section.

Mason Emery (82) is the junior No.1 seed while Josh Adams is top of the endeavour division.

Jo Kerr (senior), Jean Foot (intermediate) and Kath Papuni (junior) are the top seeds in the women’s club championships. The second round of qualifying was held at the weekend.

POVERTY BAY

King of the Coast William Brown’s dominion extends to Poverty Bay golf course.

The reigning senior men’s club champion, fresh from retaining the KotC crown in Tolaga Bay, sent a “come and get it” warning to his challengers in club championship qualifying on Saturday.

But his 76 was only just good enough to earn the No.1 seeding.

Brown fended off Simon Jeune on countback as only five players managed to break 80 off the championship tees — although that was two better than last year.

Pete Anderson qualified third with 77, Peter Clayton fourth with 78 and Mark Jefforson fifth with 79.

The top 16 cut-off was 87 — David Situ, who will need a Jekyll-Hyde turnaround to have any chance of beating Brown in the first round of matchplay this weekend.

Jeune plays Nick Richardson, who had a Jekyll-Hyde turnaround in the opposite direction with his 87 — six days after shooting 75.

Anderson has a potentially tricky match-up with Glenn Morley.

Alex Kirkpatrick led the intermediate qualifying with 81, including a back-nine 38, on countback from Darren Patumaka, with Don Griffin third on 82.

Keith Marshall’s 90 was good enough to top the juniors. Colin Christie (91) and Shaun Boyd (91) were the next best in the 11-strong field.

Pete Goodwin’s 101 led the endeavour men, who will go straight into semifinals.

The four-round Dodgshun Cup series was wrapped up with two rounds over the weekend including club champs qualifying.

Defending Division 1 champion Brown only played in two rounds, which put him out of the hunt as players count their best three of four scores.

Morley was one of only two seniors who completed three rounds and comfortably won the silverware with a 243 (77, 86, 80) total.

Defending Div 2 champion Richard Foon posted 252 (88, 77, 87) to go back-to-back.

Bill Simpson, as the only Div 3 players to post three scores, won with 287 (95, 97, 95).

PATUTAHI

Qualifying has been sorted in the club championships. Now it’s on with the matchplay show.

Defending senior men’s champ Hukanui Brown, on a mission to make it five crowns on the trot, is No.1 seed, thanks to his 67.

It put him directly into the  September 3 semifinals where he faces the winner of the match between Regan Hindmarsh and Jace Brown.

Reigning champion Tom Hindmarsh shot the best intermediate score in qualifying but has had to pull out due to an upcoming operation. Second qualifier Hamish Harris has been promoted to the top spot.

Tony Sharp is at No.1 in the 10-man junior field, and is one of six who earned byes into the quarterfinals.

Steve Fookes top qualified in the endeavour section where nine players are vying for the honours.
