POVERTY BAY

Murray Smith discovered his best form of 2023 to produce the round of the week on a Poverty Bay course that has proved a challenge over the past couple of weeks.

Doc Smith won the division 2 men’s stableford on Saturday with 93-27-66, for 42 points.

Colin Simpson continued his solid form on Sunday, chalking up his second sub-80 round of the year to win the division 1 men’s stableford with 79-10-69, for 39 points.

Tony Battistella went from glory to gory in the space of a couple of days.

The American was on Cloud 9 after winning the division 1 men’s stableford on Thursday with 78-9-69, for 39 points, off the blue tees. Two days later he plummeted to terra firma without a parachute — shooting  14 shots worse.

Jan Utting and Peri Gayford won the Nancy McCormick women’s 36-hole foursomes played this week. They totalled 143 for the two net rounds.

Pen Wanklyn had a hole-in-one on the sixth hole on her way to winning the women’s net on Monday. Story to follow.

PATUTAHI

Geoffrey “Butch” McKenzie  broke 80 for the only the second time this year and it earned him stableford glory on top of a sweet-tasting 19th-hole brew.

McKenzie carded 79-14-65 for 41 points and a comfortable win in the junior men’s stableford on Sunday.

Ashley Hindmarsh had a two in his senior men’s division-winning 80-13-68, for 38 points.

He headed off George Brown, who followed up his Friday meat pack 9-hole stableford-winning 22-point haul with 38 on Sunday.

Charlie Holland looks set to slip under the century mark. She won the women’s stableford on Sunday with 100-30-70, for 38 points.

TE PUIA SPRINGS

Ian Logan and Iritana Ngarimu were the competition winners in heavy conditions on Sunday.

Logan won the men’s stableford with 77-12-65, for 37 points.

Ngarimu only had one person to beat in the women’s competition but still played solidly to win with 96-27-69, for 35 points.

SUNDAY - Men’s stableford: I Logan 37, D Goldsmith 36, N Mackie 36, M Higham 33.

Women’s stableford: I Ngarimu 35, H McClutchie 30.

MAHIA

Rusty Smith’s sizzling back nine holes powered him to a dominant victory in the men’s stableford on Sunday.

Smith had two birdies in a back-nine of 39 and shot 87-23-64, for 44 points.

Lee Steel and Paipan Denigan won the Nancy McCormick women’s 36-hole foursomes with a net 153 (76, 77).

ELECTRINET PARK

Modest golf was winning golf on Saturday.

Horst Schreiber won with 91-18-73, for 34 points.

Tuesday’s scoring was a little warmer in the veterans’s par competition.

Paul Wellard mixed 13 bogeys with five parts in his 84-17-67, which put him 4-up on the card.

Runner-up Alan  Lewington (89-22-67) also finished 4-up.

SATURDAY - Men’s stableford: H Schreiber 34, D Craven 32, J Taylor 31, S Toa 31.

Mark Watts headed off Te Ngakau Welsh  on countback to win the stableford on Sunday. Both men posted 40 points.
