He sank a 25-foot par putt on the eighth (his penultimate hole) then holed a 3½-footer on the ninth to seal the deal. The snake on the eighth also proved vital in him claiming the “Sunday School” jackpot of scoring two stableford points or more on every hole.
To cap a memorable day, the man known as “BJ” won the division 1 men’s stableford with 46 points, denying Nigel Udy, who was second with a near-as impressive 73-9-64, for 44.
Sunday’s scoring continued a three-day theme of big stableford points highlighted by a weekend victory double to Kim Travers.
Fresh from a personal-best 83 on September 21, Travers carded consecutive 86s for 43 points to win the division 2 men’s stableford on Saturday and Sunday.
The Saturday win was on countback from Andy Hayward (80-15-65) and Basil Payne (83-18-65).
Travers teed off this morning in the opening qualifying round of the Poverty Bay men’s open on a handicap index of 16.7 — 2.0 below his previous index.
“Friday Flash” results were the hottest over the three-day period.
Lyndsay Ball carded 79-18-61, for 47 points. It was his lowest round of the year by seven shots and his first sub-80 score since February of 2008.
Barry Brown also ventured into unfamiliar 70s territory. His 79-17-62, for 46 points, broke a drought dating back to March of 2014.
Tene Goldsmith and Gay Young are the 2017 DJ Barry Jug pairs champions. They came from behind to win the South African net medal 36-hole title with a score of 586, just three ahead of Don McFadyen and MJ Bloem.
The excellent individual scoring has not been restricted to the men.
Ishbel McKinnon won the women’s grocery stableford yesterday with 108-42-66, for 44 points. It followed her stableford-winning 41 points the day before.
Mary Allan posted her best round of the year — 87 off 21 — to finish second in the grocery stableford with 43 points, followed by Annabelle Sutton (42), Vicki Fraser (42), Peri Gayford (41) and June MacKinnon (40).

Shirley Paku had her best round of the year (a 90) on September 17. On Sunday she had her second best — 93-25-68 — to win the women’s stableford with 41 points.

MARK Higham denied Bill Clark a club championship title in his return to the Coast after a lengthy stint in Australia.
Higham beat Clark 4 and 3 in the intermediate men’s club championship final on Sunday.
The win highlighted some solid scoring by Higham over the past three weeks including his first sub-80 round at Poverty Bay (78 last Thursday) — of which he is also a member — since February of 2016.
Raana Walker won the men’s stableford on Sunday with 40 points.

Junior reps
A patchwork Poverty Bay-East Coast team are battling at the junior interprovincial challenge in Cambridge.
PBEC, a six-strong compilation of homegrown and outside players, are zero from three after three rounds.
They lost 4-2 to Northland in round 1, 6-0 to hosts Waikato in round 2 and 4½ to 1½ to Bay of Plenty in round 3.
The two Wades provided PBEC’s individual wins against Northland.
Mahia’s Wade Wesche, at No.3 in the side, won 1-up and Wairoa’s Wade Williams, at No.2, also won on 18.
No.1 Tini Hawea, after heavy losses in the opening two rounds, had a 2-up victory against Bay of Plenty while Williams had a half.
PBEC next face Canterbury in the week-long tournament which culminates in placing playoffs.
