TONI Rutene was taught to play golf by grandfather Terry.

On Sunday she won the tournament that honours him.

Toni defeated Larry Green in the final of the Terry “Dunga” Rutene memorial 4x9-hole matchplay tournament.

Whānau is a huge part of the annual event and there was a particularly strong Rutene presence this year.

Sonny Rutene junior, the son of Terry’s late brother Sonny, beat Marg Tuapawa in the championship plate final.

“It was definitely my best-ever golfing moment,” Wright said. “I played the final about four years ago against Pat Butler and I lost playing the worst golf ever.

“That drove me not to let that happen again,” said Wright, who also had praise for his opponent.

“It was great to play against Andy. He never gives up.”
