Tolaga BayEddie Brown junior transferred the high of his vital win at the Toro national interprovincial men’s tournament in Christchurch to Tolaga Bay’s Christmas tournament on Sunday.

Brown jr, a late call-up to the Poverty Bay-East Coast side for the Toro, won his final match as PBEC ended the week with a team half against high-flying Manawatu-Wanganui.

He and PBEC teammate, younger brother and Patutahi clubmate Hukanui were back in action at the Christmas tournament where Brown shot 2-over 70-7-63 to win the men’s stableford with 41 points.

His round featured an eagle-2 on the 321-metre 16th hole, where he ripped an enormous drive to pin-high of the green and chipped in.

He won the stableford on countback from Te Puia Springs stalwart Peter Harrison.

Father and daughter Mark and Doreen Watts dominated the Canadian mixed foursomes. Their 45-point performance was four clear of ’Tahi pair Tony Green and Jenny Ruru

Gisborne ParkHe may not be the golfer of old but there’s still some brilliance in Butch Atkins’ game.

The 60-plus-year-old started last week on an 11-handicap. By the Thursday handicap change he was on 8, thanks to a series of sub-80 scores including a 1-over 73-11-62 in the Tuesday veteran men’s stableford.

Atkins had twos on the second and fifth holes and another birdie on the 13th in his winning haul of 46 points.

Rod Moore and Tracey Ford did the weekend double.

Moore won both men’s stableford with 76-8-68, for 40 points, on Saturday, and 79 for 37 points on Sunday.

Ford reciprocated in the women’s competition, with 97-24-73, for 36 points, on Saturday, and 98 for 36 — coming back from a nine on the first — on Sunday.

Poverty BayGray Clapham has been part of the district’s surfing fabric for decades so he knows all about riding the wave.

Especially the fact that at some stage it will come to an end, as it did golf-wise on Sunday after a profitable patch of form.

Clapham won the division one men’s stableford last Thursday with 82-14-68, followed it with another win — this time with 38 points in the div 2 stableford on Saturday — then came to the end of the ride with 95 on Sunday.

Bob Proudfoot had an eventful round last Thursday. His division 2 stableford-winning 88-21-67, for 41 points, featured three birdies — one of those a 2 on the 11th — and a couple of triples to keep it real.

Brian Clarke also had 41 points and a two but Proudfoot got the countback nod.

A triple bogey 7 on the 15th hurt but didn’t derail Darren Patumaka’s Sunday stableford campaign.

He won with 80-13-67, for 41 points, just missing out on scoring in the 70s for only the second time this year.

Patumaka denied Mark Jefferson’s solid 76-8-67 on countback.

PatutahiPARS and bogeys were all Selwyn Pohatu dealt in on Sunday.

Pohatu had 10 pars and five bogeys in his 75-12-63, which won him the men’s net.

Lorraine topped the women’s net with 68 and was back in the winner’s circle in the Tuesday women’s net.

Kelvyn Donovan rattled off 26 points to win the junior division of the Friday meat pack nine-hole stableford.

VeteransGisborne Park member Barry Cox was rewarded for his consistency with the Gisborne East Coast Veteran Golfers’ Society’s Player of the Year title.

Cox attended nine of the 11 counting events over the season and ended up a comprehensive winner of the points series and McGregor Trophy — finishing 11 points clear of 2017 winner Peter Harrison of Te Puia Springs.

The naming of the POTY honours was the final act of the GEC veterans’ season that ended on Tuesday, although it was not the highlight of the day.

A special meeting saw the society’s constitution revised to allow women to become members. This was passed unanimously while the qualifying age for men was reduced from 55 years to 50 in alignment with the women.

The season finale on the course was a Christmas Cheer tournament at Poverty Bay and 42 vets from Mahia to Te Puia Springs took part.

Park member Brian Lumsden-Nicholls won the par competition with an excellent +7 score, just ahead of the in-form Bob Proudfoot on +6 and Patutahi’s Dave Maloy on +5.

The first event of the 2019 season is the popular interclub challenge between Poverty Bay and Gisborne Park at the Park on January 22.

All vets from both clubs are welcome to play.
