Patutahi

Reuben Mottart won the day but the in-form Hukanui Brown earned the limelight with another round deep in the red on Sunday.

Having recently broken the course record with 8-under 62, Brown fired 64-+3-67, for 39 points. His round included an eagle-2 on the 297-metre 11th, five birdies and a single bogey.

However, it was only good enough for third behind Mottart (40 points) on countback from George Brown.

SUNDAY — All-in stableford: R Mottart 40, G Brown 40, H Brown 39, M King 39, L Jamieson 33.

Poverty Bay

A birdie-2 on the 11th hole was the pinnacle of Jaye McCafferty’s victorious round at another successful edition of the Pharmacy 53/Beaufoy/Village Homeware Classic yesterday.

McCafferty’s 104-34-70 won the overall net — matching nines of 52 showing her consistency.

Poverty Bay’s Peri Gayford was similarly solid in placing second with 95-24-71 on countback from Te Puia Springs’ Iritana Ngarimu with 104-33-71.

Home-course player Janet Muir won the stableford with 90-18-72, for 38 points.

Electinet Park’s Kino White won the gross with 90 and was the only other player to have a two.

Rose Pettigrew’s 20 stableford points was the best of the 9-holers.

Simon Jeune slipped into red figures strokeplay-wise for the first time since January 2021 in winning the men’s stableford on Saturday.

That is a surprisingly long time for a player of the quality of the 2019 Poverty Bay Open champion — who was under the card when he won that title — although the fact he is on a 2-handicap underlines his consistency.

Jeune’s weekend effort of 70-2-68, for 40 points, featured four birdies, including a two, and won him the division 1 men’s stableford.

He gave signs of that last Thursday at 2-under after 14 holes only to drop four shots from the 15th to 17th.
