POVERTY BAY

He tempted fate last year. Not this time.

Simon Jeune chose not to repeat his 2022 action of touching the giant Enterprise Motor Warehouse open foursomes trophy before teeing off on Saturday.

Eighteen holes later he and Glenn Morley had completed a successful defence of the men’s gross title and with it came another filling of the biggest silverware in local golf — a cup in which over  100 golf balls can fit.

The Jeune/Morley combo shot 4-over 76 to win by one shot from Park duo Dan Collier and Tony Akroyd,

Morley, in his acceptance speech, gave much of the credit to Jeune, who he said was in “vintage” form.

“It was awesome to watch. He carried me. He’s got sore shoulders, I’d say.”

He also made a touching reference to Te Puia Springs member and Poverty Bay East Coast representative Andrew Higham, who is in the thoughts of many of the golfing community after suffering multiple serious injuries in a car crash at Mahia the previous weekend.
