A return to regular golf last month has quickly reached a high for Di Sherratt — victory in the Kahlenberg Cup women’s pairs.

Sherratt and Rosie Spence defeated Jan Utting and Marg Lane 3 and 2 in the handicap matchplay final on a glorious Gisborne day yesterday.

“It was a miracle,” a delighted Sherratt said. “I can’t believe we won.”

The former member of country club Tahunga has only played in patches since she and husband Tim shifted into the city and joined Poverty Bay several years ago.

She decided to get out and play more this year and said the Kahlenberg Cup was “a good way to get back into it”.

Clearly it was.

Sherratt, off 38, and Spence, off 29, had a blow-for-blow clash against Utting, off 18, and Lane, off 35.

“I think we halved one hole,” said Sherratt, who acknowledged Utting as having to give all the shots.

“It was hard (for Jan). They had to play out of their skins.”

Sherratt said it was the first Kahlenberg title for both of them.

The Kahlenberg Plate final was a close encounter. Lynne Holmberg and Odette Thompson beat Leigh Fletcher and Jenny Williams on the 18th.

Watch out for The Miss Fits.

That’s the warning for the Te Kanawa Cup men’s pairs top seeds as they prepare for a baptism by fire introduction to matchplay golf.

The Miss Fits, aka Paul Wellard and Rob Taylor, disposed of Young Guns Te Ariki Pomana and Silas Brown 4 and 3 to book a round of 16 clash with No.1-ranked Chris Fox and Matthew Downie for the highly sought-after trophy.

Fox and Downie, under the team name No 1 Deer, are new to the matchplay game and as the first seeds in a 31-pair competition earned a bye into round 2.

The defending champions were among those who fell at the first matchplay hurdle.

Matt Henwood and Craig Christophers, aka Trust The Process, lost on the 16th to Derek Craven and Josh Hayes.

Also out are former Te K winners Anaru Reedy and Pete Tamatea, who were well beaten by second-seeded Ian Loffler and Steve Webb.

Pete Stewart’s run of success over the past couple of weeks ended as he and Josh Hayes were dumped 3 and 2 by James Witika and Steve Phillips.

The Two Tones — Tony Akroyd and Tony Leggett — blasted past Sel Peneha and Dave Te Maro 5 and 4. An Akroyd two on the par-3 14th sealed it in style.

Others to advance were Master Cards John Collier Sr and Cliff Nepe; the Carpenipia combo of Wayne Carpendale and Phil Nepia; Rolls Royce father and son pair Steve and Zach Rolls; Rod Moore and Duane Mauheni; Shaun Nepe and Charlie Uili; Booze Bros Dan Collier and Ray Walford; and John Collier jr and Waiti Tamatea
