DOWNPOURS were the talk of the First Light Frozen/Taste One Xmas Hams open tournament on Sunday.

Wet weather resulted in some non-appearances and others pulling the pin during their round but amid this there were several impressive scores.

The rain didn’t bother Sue Johnstone. The 9-hole regular showed she could convert that to 18 with 97-27-70, for 40 points, to win the women’s overall stableford

“As we all folded, she just got better,” husband Rob said.

Tom Reynolds whipped over from his Electrinet Gisborne Park course to win the men’s overall stableford with 79-11-68, for 40.

THOMAS Donovan flew like an eagle last Thursday . . . well, eagles to be exact.

Donovan had eagles on the first and ninth holes in a scintillating 5-under 31 for 24 points and victory in the Diggit Gizzy twilight stableford.

After playing partner Tony Akroyd stiffed his second shot on the par-5 first to tap-in distance of the hole for an eagle, Donovan followed suit, albeit via a different path.

TD chipped in from behind a bunker for his 3. He made birdie on the third, then parred all the way to the ninth, where he hit what he described as “a baby 6-iron” to about 10 feet of the hole, and sank the putt.

Thirty players are in the qualifying hunt for the twilight shootout final.

Heading into the last couple of twlight competitions before Christmas, these 30, as of last week, had registered the required five scores.

Another five scores from when the twilight competition resumes next year are needed.

The top 10 players qualify for the hole-by-hole elimination final, the winner collecting $1000.

Matt Henwood is leading qualifing on 104 stableford points at an impressive average of 20.8, Dave Rameka is second on 97 and Craig Christophers third on 95.

Al Nairne took two bites of the victory cherry last week.

Nairne won the veterans’ Tuesday stableford with 90-21-69, for 39 points, then completed the double on Saturday with 37 points.

SATURDAY — Men’s stableford: A Nairne 37, H Schreiber 36pts.

TUESDAY (Dec 7) — Veterans’ stableford: A Nairne 39, P Simpson 38, H Schreiber 38, B Lumsden-Nicholls 37, D Te Maro 36, E Parkin 36, C Brown 36, C Aramakutu 36, W Brown 35, B Walker 33.

Twos: H Schreiber.

COMING UP: SUNDAY, AGM, 9am (members are encouraged to get their committee nomination forms in), followed by Colin Campbell Cup drawn mixed pairs aggregate stableford, 10.30am tee-off.

DARYL Goldsmith stepped back in time to post the round of the day at the Cooks Passenger and Courier Services Te Puia Springs’ Christmas tournament on Saturday.

Goldsmith rediscovered the form of old in breaking 80 for the first time in 6½ years — carding 79-20-59 to win the men’s overall net.

Thomas Donovan’s up-and-down 7-over 73 was good enough to top the men’s gross while James Forrester won the stableford with 78-17-61, for 41 points.

Hazel Miratana reproduced her previous weekend fireworks to win the women’s gross with 84 off a 22 handicap. She shot 84 the Sunday before.

Hiria McClutchie won the net with 91-26-65 and Pauline Summersby won the stableford with 37 points.
