The symbolic connection between the falling of a long-time Poverty Bay Golf Club member and pine trees on the 10th hole at Poverty Bay Golf Club was not lost on some. A tree on the right-hand side of the fairway of the 10th hole fell a couple of weeks ago and on Monday morning, Poverty Bay life member and junior golf stalwart Arthur Bacon passed away. The trees protected the nearby eighth fairway from big but wild drives from the 10th tee, and many players over the decades found themselves stuck behind them. Straight-talking Arthur could be an equally formidable obstacle but contributed immensely to the club and golfing community over his 50-plus years at Poverty Bay. All of the trees in that area were brought down this week. “RIP old girl, you’ve served us well,” greenkeeper and former scratch handicapper Rowan Clark, who took this picture, wrote on Facebook this week. Rest in peace, Arthur was also uttered by many of those who attended his funeral yesterday. A tribute to Arthur is to follow.

Jandy was Mrs Consistency in topping the women with a 179 total. Her nines told the story . . . 45, 44, 46, 44.

Bullets flew but not a drop of blood was spilled  as Waikohu’s top guns were found on Sunday.

Reeves emerged the survivor from an eight-man field, disposing of Tom Smith in the deciding hole of the net elimination final.

Tamanui-Nunn saw off seven other hopefuls, with Margy Tuapawa the last to fall.

There will be more casualties this weekend in the annual Coates and McLean 4x12-hole matchplay tournament.

Craig Christophers is sitting in the No.1 spot in qualifying for the men’s 18-hole shootout final.

James Witika is six shots behind on 421, with Anthony on 424.

Reigning champion Ian Loffler, who beat Christophers in a putt-off on the 18th last year, looks well on track to making the 19-man final. He is fifth on 428.

Danny Boyle is in the 19th and last spot.

The last attempt of the day proved a winning one in the simulator approach competition at last Thursday’s twilight competition.

Chris Fox was the final player to have a go and put his attempt closest to join David Gray in the final to be held at the end of the twilight series.

Shannon Collier, inspired by an at-the-very-least $150  60-degree wedge he has been trialling, won the stableford with 24 points, one ahead of Dave Harrison, inspired by his beloved Tottenham Hotspur team leading the English Premier League.
