Gisborne Park

LEO Lexmond has fond memories of his days with Gisborne Thistle AFC.

So it was fitting that he produce a special round as a tribute to the club and one of its more colourful characters at the Thistle AFC annual golf tournament on Sunday.

Lexmond won the overall net with a score to match the energy-sapping heat — 92-32-60 — and added his name to the list on the Judy O’Rourke Memorial Trophy.

At 82 years of age, he is the oldest winner of this illustrious silverware that honours Thistle and Gisborne Park stalwart Jude, who died in 2006.

Son Kerry was at the prizegiving on Sunday, along with younger members of the O’Rourke whanau, to present the trophy.

Cart-driving Lexmond’s round was all about consistency. He had 15 bogeys over the 18 holes including eight in a row on the back nine.

It was his best round since a freakish 87 off a 33-handicap in May of 2015.

David Hall claimed the other trophy up for grabs — a personal best round earning him the Morley Cup for the best stableford score by a Thistle club member. Hall had 42 points.

There was hot scoring throughout the divisions on a course ripe for the picking.

Richard Foon, still fizzing from a career-best 77 at his home Poverty Bay course on Saturday, repeated that effort to win the division 2 men’s stableford with 77-14-63, for 45 points.

Jack Glassford still has breaking his age in his sights although the 72-year-old had to settle for 77-12-65, for 43 points, to place second in division 2.

Dennis Jenkins took great delight in beating fellow firefighter Glassford by one stableford point. His 91-27-64, for 44 points, won the division 3 men’s stableford, with Stu Harbottle a point back.

Thomas Donovan’s 73-7-66, for 42 points, won the division 1 men’s stableford.

Best of the women was Wiki Morrissey with 40 points.

Anaru Reedy, off a +1, shot 1-under 71 to win the overall men’s gross. Pete Anderson went out in 3-under 33 but a bogey on 10 and double-bogey on 11 cost him and he lost on countback to Reedy.

Tessa McDonald predictably won the women’s gross although her 5-over 78 was only one stroke ahead of Jo Kerr.

Poverty Bay

RICHARD Foon’s putter took pride of place in his bag after a double personal best performance over the weekend.

Foon had a career-best 77-15-62 at his home Poverty Bay course on Saturday. His round featured two lots of consecutive birdies — on the fourth and fifth holes, and the 17th and 18th.

He followed it up on Sunday with a second 77 at the Thistle AFC annual golf tournament at Gisborne Park.

It was his lowest score at the Park and won him the division 2 men’s net.

Foon put it down to his putting and gave credit to mate Neville West for his putting advice.

Foon’s weekend performance saw his handicap plummet from 13.8 to 11.6.

One disastrous hole could not stop Gray Clapham from win in the men’s Thursday stableford last week.

Clapham had 44 points to win division 1, an otherwise excellent card marred by a ringed-8 on the par-5 12th.

Ray Veall is showing positive signs after getting back into the game on a regular basis last September.

The former professional footballer won the division 2 stableford on Thursday with 82-16-66, for 42 points — his third consecutive round under handicap.

Basil Payne produced the competition round of the day on Saturday in winning the division 2 men’s stableford with 82-16-66, for 42 points.

Vance Richardson’s 78-11-67, for 41 points, won division 1.

JUSTIN Baty is loving Patutahi.

The rising Waikohu talent followed up the previous weekend’s winning performance with an even better display on Sunday.

His 76-15-61, which won the men’s 0-17 net by five strokes, featured birdies on the first, second and third holes.

Mo Farmer’s 84-20-64 won the 18+ division while Jenny Ruru won the women’s net with 93-33-60.

Ashley Hindmarsh posted probably his best nine-hole score to win the junior division of the Friday meat pack stableford last week. The 20-handicapper shot 3-over 38 for 26 points.

Sel Pohatu won the senior division with a 1-under 34 for 24 points.

TAMA Brown and Percy Milner combined forces to win the Canadian foursomes nine-hole net on Sunday.

The Brown/Milner combo returned 29, two ahead of Ike Ruru and Ella Wynyard.

JIM Devery made a decisive move in round 2 of the Summer Cup series on Sunday.

Devery won the net round with 77-15-62, two shots ahead of Ian Skyes, with Henry Rasmussen. Georgina Roberts and Peter Harrison another stroke back.

Round 3 is on Sunday.
