A HANDFUL OF ACES: Anaru Reedy retrieves his ball out of the hole at Gisborne Park on Sunday after racking up the fifth official hole-in-one of his impressive career. Reedy sank a 9-iron on the 140-metre fifth hole during the quarterfinals of the men's club championships. Reedy added it to aces at Te Puia Springs — on his way to victory in the final of the East Coast Open in 2003 — and three Wellington courses —Karori, Miramar and Hutt Park. The latest highlighted a brilliant performance in his senior men's match against Pete Stewart, with Reedy 5-under the card when they shook hands on the 13th. A multiple winner of the East Coast Open, Reedy is the lowest handicapped player (+1.0) in the Poverty Bay-East Coast region and is building towards the Poverty Bay Open in two weeks and the New Zealand amateur here in October. Both tournaments are at the Poverty Bay course. Picture supplied

Twenty years after winning the junior women's club championship final, Kath Papuni did it again.

In what she will look back on as a golfing year to remember, Papuni beat defending champion Di Webb in a sudden-death playoff on Saturday.

Papuni went into the 18-hole final on the back of two consecutive runner-up finishes, perhaps putting a little extra pressure on her.

There was never more than one hole between the pair. Papuni won the 16th to go 1-up,

Webb responded by winning the 17th and the pair halved the 18th to force extra holes.

Only one was needed, Papuni sealing the win to add a club championship crown to her Benson Cup pairs (with Jacque Akuhata-Nickerson) and Agnes Attwood women's matchplay titles this year.

Jo Kerr made it four senior women's titles in a row, coasting to an 8 and 7 win over 2015 senior champion Blanche Walker.

The intermediate final between Tracey Ford and three-time champion Jean Foot is to be played at a later date.

The top seeds in the men's club championships all advanced to the last four from quarterfinals on Sunday.

Senior men's No.1 qualifier Anaru Reedy was the most impressive and it appears it is going to take something special to stop him from claiming a third consecutive piece of silverware in recent months.

Reedy was 5-under the card when he and Pete Stewart shook hands on the 13th, his flawless performance reaching perfect heights with a hole-in-one on the fifth.

It set up a semifinal with Selwyn Peneha, who beat Tom Reynolds on the 17th.

Rod Moore outplayed Rob Taylor 5 and 4 and next faces defending champion Brad Reynolds, who beat Zane Boyle 3 and 2 in the battle of the besties.

Intermediate top seed Ray Walford had one of the matches of the day against Glen McKinnon, with Walford getting home on the last.

His semifinal opponent is Steve Phillips, who thumped Phil Nepia 6 and 5.

Zach Rolls' hopes of a Poverty Bay-Gisborne Park intermediate double were dashed by Ben Cameron 3 and 2.

Cameron next meets Anthony Pahina, who ousted defending champion Danny Boyle on the 17th.

Junior No.1 Dave Harrison ended the Rolls campaign with a win over Steve Rolls — Zach's dad.

Harrison's semifinal adversary is Pete Tamatea, who won “the battle of the greenkeepers” against Ray Grace.

Second seed Glyn Williams got past Barry Cox on the 18th.

Up against him in the semis is Neal Jones, who beat Williams' son Alan, also on the 18th.

A FAST start propelled Hukanui Brown to a successful defence of the senior men's crown as the cream of the club rose to the top on Sunday.

Brown defeated a perhaps weary Shayde Skudder 7 and 6 in the 36-hole matchplay final.

Having fallen to Waikohu in the Poverty Bay premier club rugby final the previous day, YMP captain Skudder found himself behind early in his second final of the weekend.

Brown won the opening three holes, was 5-up seven holes and from there “I just held him out” in a solid display from the big man.

Brown was joined on the 2020 club champion list by Denise Johnston, Tony Green, Mike de Luze, Andrea Haisman and Mike Broad.

Johnston proved too good for Jandy Winiata in the senior women's final, winning 8 and 7.

Green was a 4 and 3 victor over Selwyn Pohatu in the intermediate men's final.

Haisman overpowered Jan Ewart 12 and 11 in the junior women's final.

De Luze retained the junior men's title with a 2-up defeat of Jamie Brodie.

Mike Broad best Sai Eder 4 and 3 in the 18-hole endeavour men's final.

Dinner will follow play.
