Tairāwhiti golfers will be familiar with the name Craig Van Der Nagel, who has been starring for the Bay of Plenty team at the Freyberg Masters men’s national interprovincial on the Awapuni Links course this week. Te Puke Golf Club member Van Der Nagel is the nephew of former Poverty Bay-East Coast representative Collin Jeffrey and was in Gisborne in September for the Poverty Bay Open on the Awapuni course. He and BoP teammate Mark Smith made the championship 16 matchplay final, which Smith won on the 20th hole. That experience clearly put them in good stead for this week’s over-40s national interprovincial. Van Der Nagel, at No.3 in the BoP five-man squad, chalked up his fifth win from as many matches yesterday as BoP drew 2½-all with defending champions Wellington in a top-of-the-table match-up. Smith had a win at No.2 for a record of four wins and one loss (on the 18th). Picture by Paul Rickard

Darryn White and Marg Colebourne are the 2023 Primo Cup champions.

White won the men’s title while Colebourne won the women’s crown, along with the hidden partners competition run alongside the Primo Cup final.

White shot 77 off his 10-handicap. The cup finals format was front-nine net minus back-nine stableford and White’s winning score was 33-20-13.

Colebourne was also in top form in posting 85-15-70. Her winning score was 32-17-15.

Colebourne’s name was drawn alongside chief sponsor Dave Jenkins of Country Foods Gisborne for the hidden partners. Jenkins donated back his prize as a lucky draw which was won by Alex Kirkpatrick.

Coincidentally, Colebourne, Jenkins and Kirkpatrick were all in the same playing group, along with 2022 Prime Cup women’s winner Teresa Lewis.

A front-nine holes of 3-under 33 set Glenn Morley up for victory in the division 1 men’s stableford last Thursday. Morley went on to shoot 73-4-69, for 39 points.

Chic would have been proud.

Freida Brown and moko Dan Collier won the 2023 Mitchell Cup mixed foursomes title on Sunday and no doubt the late Chic Brown — Freida’s husband — was smiling from above.

Collier and his nan compiled 42 stableford points to win by one point from Jason Lloyd and Di Webb, with Craig Christophers and Jo Kerr third on 39.

“Proud to get over the line for Nan Freida after a tough year for her,” a proud Collier posted on Facebook. “She’s got some big shoulders to carry her oldest over the line.”

Craig Christophers will be looking to go one better than last year when he tees off as No.1 qualifier in the men’s shootout final on Sunday.

Christophers was beaten by Ian Loffler in a putt-off in last year’s 19-man, hole-by-hole net elimination final.
