Carpendale had chipped in for four for the win on the same hole to start the round.
The Rolls face fellow father-son combo Shannon and Beau Toa in the next round. That match teed off at lunchtime today.
Another father-son duo — Danny and Zane Boyle — could do little about the way they were eliminated in a 19-hole battle with Shaun Nepe and Charlie Uili.
Having fought back from 2-down with three holes to play, the Boyles watched as Uili made par on the first extra hole getting two shots off Zane.
Uili and Nepe next face Ian Loffler and Steve Webb.
The other quarterfinal pits Steve Phillips and James Witika against John Collier Jr and Waiti Tamatea.
TUESDAY (June 14) — Veterans' stableford: E Parkin 35, R Taiapa 35, C Carpendale 34, A Lewington 34, H Schreiber 33, P Wellard 31.
The surnames Norman and Jenkins are in gold lettering on the Barns-Graham Cup men's pairs honours board for 2018.
That could be the case again in 2022, although with a significant difference.
Dave Jenkins and Mark Norman won the illustrious BG Cup title in 2018.
Jenkins is back this year but this time with Norman's cousin, Rod Norman.
And on their showing in qualifying for the BG Cup on Saturday, it's a combination as dangerous as the 2018 conquerors.
Jenkins and Rod Norman clinched the top seeding with a best-ball stableford score of 47 points off the championship blue tees.
Rod, off an 18-handicap, had seven pars and a four-point birdie-2 in his round while 7-handicapper Jenkins' efforts included pars on five of his shot holes. The pair had seven three-pointers on the back nine (they started on the 10th).
Jenkins and Norman top qualified on countback from Cliff Poole and Vance Richardson. Second again Poole probably thought as he and Colin Christie lost the 2018 final to Jenkins and Mark Norman.
Three combos posted 45 points — Nick Whyte and Tim Williams, 2017 BG winners Paul Mullooly and Neil Mackie, and Pete Graham and Willy Mortleman.
Defending champions Andy Hayward and Mark Stewart qualified well down in 20th but could rightly point out they're in the hunt, and that's all that matters.
Among the 34 pairs vying for the 32 qualifying places were several players having to do it solo as their partners were unavailable.
The best of those was senior club champion William Brown (whose partner is Mark Barker), who had 38 points courtesy of a 3-under 69 that featured five birdies, including the jackpot of two twos.
It was good enough for 27th spot and a first-round match against Dave Hall and Simon Jeune.
Stu Harbottle (John Van Helden his partner) also had to do it on his own and responded with an admirable 36 for 28th spot.
Alex Kirkpatrick (Rob Fergus partner) grabbed the 32nd and last spot with his 34 points.
The two to miss out were both flying solo — Bruce Talbot (Glen Udall partner) on 29 and Graeme Eriksen (Jeremy Castles partner) 23.
■ JAN Utting and Marg Colebourne know how to win.
They have done it time and again at home and away and while it wasn't the prettiest performance, their efforts in yesterday's OPSM women's 18-hole foursomes were good enough to do it again.
The Utting/Colebourne duet topped the gross with a modest 93 and with it collected the Foursomes Salver.
The Reah Lahmert Cup for best net was tight. Birgitt Whyte and Maxine Francois won on countback from Anne Witters and Sue Kemp.
Lesley Daniels and Sandy Armstrong ran away with the 9-holers' net. Their 34, highlighted by a two, earned them the honours by six shots.
Top seed Vicki Fraser successfully cleared the first matchplay hurdle in the Hutchinson Cup.
Fraser defeated Marg Lane to advance. Other winners were Lynne Holmberg, Pip Dymock, Kirsty Shaw, Maxine Francois, defending champion Odette Thompson, Pen Wanklyn and Rosie Spence.

The open was held in conjunction with round 6 of the Poverty Bay women's interclub pennants series.
