Poverty BayTHE top seeds survived, the defending champions did not as the Barns-Graham Cup men’s pairs produced its usual anthology of agony and ecstasy over the weekend.
The contenders are down to 16 duos following a doubleheader featuring qualifying on Saturday and the first round of matchplay the following morning.
Ross Gibson and Don Wright claimed the No.1 seeding with a best-ball stableford total of 48 points, one point ahead of surprise package Les Gunther and Craig Bauld — Bauld playing the first hole by himself due to Gunther’s late arrival.
Several pairs returned 46 points as the cut-off was made at 40, with some on that score missng out on countback.
Among those who failed to make the cut were 2015 champions Ron Young and Pete Stewart, and runners-up Collin Jeffrey and Neville Jenkins.
Gibson and Wright almost fell at the first matchplay hurdle. They came up against a Duncan Bush-Colin Christie combo who just would not go away and had the chance of winning on the 18th. Gibson and Wright got home after four extra holes.
That 22-hole battle was matched by Dave Jenkins and Frank Ball. Most of the players had gone home by the time they returned from scraping past Allan White and Walter Mackey.
Sudden-death also decided the match between Roger Kelly/Lee Pollitt and Jim McGregor/Phil Wauchop. Pollitt sank a 20-footer on the ninth (they started on 10) to force extra holes and Kelly made birdie on the 19th for the win.
The most impressive performer of the weekend was Pete Anderson. Mixing pure ball-striking with outrageously deadly putting, he had six birdies and broke par for the first time — 71-7-64 — as he and Chris Taewa knocked out Dougal Watts and Soren Olsen 4 and 3.
The individual round of the weekend, though, came from a player not actually involved in the BG Cup. Peter Kerekere had seven birdies in a Sunday round of 69-0-69 and today became the lowest-handicapped golfer in the region — +0.4.
The Hutchinson Cup women’s women’s matchplay semifinalists have been found. Gay Young faces Leigh Fletcher in one semi while Colleen Skuse meets Dianne Jopson in the other.

Gisborne ParkRAY Grace and Anthony Pahina earned the top seeding as qualifying for the Kiri Te Kanawa Retirement Village Te Kanawa Cup men’s pairs wrapped up over the weekend.
Grace and Pahina posted a best-ball stableford total of 45 points to replace Leo Lexmond and Derek Craven in the No.1 spot.
Mason Emery and Kani Kingi are the third seeds while Brian Cox and Wayne McHugh and Brad Reynolds and Cliff Nepe complete the top five.
With 21 pairs qualifying, the top 11 enjoy a bye into round 2. The other 10 will have to take the long route to glory.
The first round of matchplay is this weekend, while the women are into round 2 of the Benson Cup pairs matchplay.

WaikohuHOME-COURSE player Tama Brown continued his purple patch with victory at the Turanga Health Waikohu Men’s Open on Saturday.
The 13-handicapper won the 11-17 gross with an 8-over 78.
Patutahi’s Eddie Brown jr posted the low round of the day, his 73 featuring four birdies and winning the 0-10 gross.

PatutahiROSS Nichol’s run of form continued with a consecutive weekend victory.
Nichol followed up his June 5 winning haul of 43 points with a 40-point effort on Sunday to top the junior men’s stableford.
Tony Green (40pts) and Jan Ewart (30) were the other weekend winners.
A couple of bogeys on Queen’s Birthday Weekend Monday denied Tony Akroyd a sniff at the men’s course record he already holds.
Akroyd had six birdies, but also two bogeys, in his 4-under6-3-63, for a stableford-winning 43 points. The course record is 63.

MahiaWAIROA duo Maureen Pickles and Kodee Green were in a class of their own in the Northern Hawke’s Bay Women’s Open Foursomes on Saturday.
The pair averaged over 21 points for each nine holes in winning the 27-hole stableford with 64 points — six clear of runners-up Marg Colebourne and Peri Gayford of Poverty Bay.
Another PB combo, Viv Bell and Di Webb, were third on countback on 54.
