The finals of the men's and women's shootouts on Saturday will be played with a tinge of sadness.

But that's not what Chic Brown would have wanted.

Chic passed away on Tuesday at the age of 74 and will be dearly missed by his Park clubmates.

If anything, the Power Connections men's shootout final will be an appropriate tribute.

Chic had a rich history in the event.

He won it three times — the first of those in mid-to-late 1980s, the third in 2016.

Over his decades of membership at Park, he chalked up all sorts of successes — from winning the prestigious Te Kanawa Cup men's pairs with Larry Payne in 1995 to his one and only club championship crown (junior division) in 1992.

He was a quality player at his peak and Thursday's Golf Roundup over the years is littered with Chic's 40-points-plus and sub-80 feats.

Chic's popularity is reflected in several posts on the Gizzy Park Golfers Facebook page . . . “will truly be missed”; “fly high with them angels”; “rest easy Chicco”;

His funeral was held at Evans Chapel today.

YOU can almost hear the words going through Carl Carmody's mind when he tees up his ball on the first hole this Sunday.

“Survive the first. Survive the first,” will be repeated over and over again and hopefully, for Carmody's sake, his psyche and swing will heed them.

Carmody is one of 19 players vying to become the 2022 Sean Shivnan Pharmacy men's shootout champion.

In last year's final, Carmody somehow managed to turn a seemingly simple six into a triple-bogey 8 on the par-5 first hole and become the first person to exit stage door left.

The shootout deserves that theatrical reference.

Nineteen players tee off the first and hole by hole the person with the worst net is eliminated.

If two or more have the same highest net their fate is decided by a chip-off or putt-off.

It's golfing drama of the highest pressure intensity and gives mere amateur mortals the chance to experience what the pros go through albeit on a lesser financial scale.

Not to say the rewards aren't noteworthy.

This year's prize pool is $3000 and the last man standing will pocket six notes featuring the number 100 and Lord Rutherford of Nelson.

Top qualifier for the final, which tees off at 9am on Saturday, was Andy Putnam with a best three rounds net score of 201.

Carmody, Cliff Poole and Bill Simpson were one stroke back.

Darryn White (208) nabbed the 19th spot, however, a spot has become available following the withdrawal of Pat Butler.

That means a chip-off will be held just before the shootout. It will involve the five players who were one shot off the 19th qualifying mark — defending champion Ian “Spud” Murphy, head greenkeeper William Brown, John van Helden, Mark Jefferson and Peter Goodwin.

To make it an event within the event, each player will have three chips and points will be allocated from closest to furthest away. The player who amasses the most points wins.

Carmody won the division 2 men's stableford last Sunday with 42 points.

Question is has he peaked too soon?

The Kevin Hollis Glass women's shootout final is also on Sunday, teeing off at 8.15am.

Kirsty Shaw top qualified with 215, three ahead of Pen Wanklyn and Teresa Lewis, who will be hoping to rekindle the fire from Saturday's impressive Primo Cup women's division-winning performance.

Lewis topped all scoring with 91-27-64.

The Primo Cup format is front nine net minus back nine stableford. For Lewis, that was 33-24-9.

Marg Colebourne (33-21-12) was second and Marg Lane (35-22-13) third.

Cliff Poole won the men's division with 33-18-15.

Duncan Bush (34-18-16) was runner-up and three players ended on 17 — Vance Richardson, Colin Simpson and Simon Jeune.

The Country Foods hidden partners was also held on Saturday.

Lewis and Bush won with a combined stableford score of 84 points from Jeune and Colebourne (80).

Goldsmith followed up her section win at Poverty Bay Golf Club's Christmas tournament last Wednesday with a runaway victory in the women's net at her home club on Sunday.

And she did it in style. Her 97-35-62 was her first sub-century score since March 2021.
