Gisborne ParkHE DIDN’T score much on the football field but Les Gunther racked up the points on the fairway to win the premier title at Gisborne Thistle AFC’s annual tournament on Sunday.
The Liquid Allsorts Thistle player-coach’s 90-26-64 earned him the Judy O’Rourke Memorial Trophy for best overall net on a hard, fast and wind-battered Park course.
Judy, who died in 2007, would no doubt have been happy to see Thistle stalwart and fellow left-hander Gunther take the silverware.
Thistle life member Paul Rickard collected one of two Morley family trophies up for grabs. His 79-14-65 was the best net by a former or current Thistle club member who is a member of a golf club.
Grunta Thomson won the non-golfers’ trophy and upstaged the big-hitting regular golfers in the field by thumping out the longest drive on the 18th — not bad for a man with artificial hips and two-thirds of a swing.
There were impressive cards also from John Charles (43 points), Ron Moiser (43), Jacque Akuhata (44) and Freida Brown (43).
Brent Colbert posted the low round of the day, a 1-over 73. The dry conditions and true greens have the course at the players’ mercy.
Tracey Ford and Geoff Sharp racked up 42 points apiece to win Saturday’s competitions. Leo Lexmond topped a list of hot scores with 97-36-61, for 47 points, to win the veteran men’s Tuesday stableford last week.

WaikohuDJ Baty, Larry Green and Valerie Grace have set the pace in the Summer Cup. Baty and Green’s 67s were the best of the men in round 1 on Sunday while Grace’s 69 leads the women. Grace, however, is only a shot ahead of Ella Wynyard, who probably wishes she had delayed her previous weekend’s 43-point haul by a week.

De Luze shot 79-21-58 to win the men’s 16+ division while Kelvyn Donovan slipped under 90 for the first time in eight months to place second on 60. Chris Beattie (65) won the 0-15 division and Denise Johnston (66) the women’s section.

Te Puia SpringsPETE Ngarimu didn’t win either of the first two rounds but he has set himself up nicely in the Summer Cup series. Dick Cook’s 41 points topped round 1 on January 8 and Jim Devery’s net 62 won round 2 last weekend. But Ngarimu’s 41 points and net 65 has him strongly placed heading into the round 3 bisque bogey this Sunday.

SeniorsGisborne East Coast seniors are counting down to their first event of the season — a trip to Mahia on Tuesday, February 14. A 40-seater bus will be heading to the beachside course and those keen to go are advised to book a seat ($10) as soon as possible. Senior women golfers have also been invited. The bus leaves the Poverty Bay car park at 9am. Bookings can be made at the Poverty Bay or Gisborne Park courses or by emailing pbseniors@outlook.com
GEC Seniors’ annual meeting will be held after play at Mahia.
Club honour and bragging rights will be at stake at the inaugural Gisborne Park v Poverty Bay seniors challenge on Tuesday, February 28, at the Park. Any member 55 years or over from either club can take part in the duel, which will be decided by average stableford.
