PENNANTS CHAMPS AGAIN: They won it in 2015 for the first time since 1978 and Poverty Bay have done it again in 2016. The city club have retained the Poverty Bay women’s pennants title. After four rounds of play, Poverty Bay finished on 28 points, 1½ ahead of Waikohu (26½), with Patutahi third on 26. Poverty BayPETE Kerekere and William “Wi” Brown reigned supreme at the Enterprise Motor Group men’s open foursomes on Saturday. But they had to come from behind to do it.

Postman Kerekere and greenkeeper Brown overcame a two-shot deficit to win the 36-hole gross title for the third year running, and with it the biggest trophy in local golf.

The winners shot 4-over 76 in the first round to be two shots off the pace set by silver foxes Collin Jeffrey and Brent Colbert, who got around in less than 2½ hours.

The leaders, however, could not maintain it in the afternoon and faded to 84, which included a horrific quintuple bogey 8 on the 11th hole.

Kerekere and Brown came in with 1-over 73 for a 149 total. They were nine-strokes clear of runners-up Dougal Watts and Brown’s fellow Poverty Bay greenkeeper Hamish Douglas, whose 158 (81, 77) headed off Jeffrey and Colbert on countback.

The net title was owned by Dave Pirimona and Kim Travers, who turned on one of the better performances in the open’s extensive history.Pirimona drove brilliantly and Travers complemented it with a deadly display on the greens as the pair posted 137 (66.5, 70.5).

They finished well clear of the pack led by Colin Christie and Brian Shields (144), with Andy Hayward and Mark Stewart (145) third.

The Kahlenberg Cup semifinalists were sorted yesterday.

Trish Corson and Jan Steele face Jan Utting and Terry Allan in one semi. Miggles Shanks and Di Sherratt play Jo Kerr and Annabelle Sutton in the other.

WaikohuPATUTAHI rocketed to the lead in the Endeavour men’s interclub pennants at the penultimate round hosted by Waikohu on Sunday.

The Tahi, led by a 42-point stableford effort from Tony Green, collected 20 points to move to 50 points — six clear of defending champions Tahunga, who managed only eight points on the day.

The individual performance of the round came from home-course player Tama Brown . . . and he needed it. Brown fired a personal best 74-14-60, for 46 points, in a 1-up win over Tahunga’s Tom Sherratt, who posted 43.

The win helped Waikohu to remain third overall on 40 points.

Gisborne Park’s Glen McKinnon (44), Sherratt (81-18-63, 43pts), Mahia’s Clay Wesche (80-15-65, 42pts), Tolaga Bay’s Walter Robinson (76-11-65, 41), Poverty Bay’s Dave Mettrick (85-16-69, 38pts) and Pete Ngarimu (84-13-71, 35pts) recorded the best stableford scores of their respective clubs.

The final round, at Poverty Bay on May 29, pits Patutahi against Tahunga. Points are halved for this round so Patutahi need three wins to seal the title.

PatutahiBRIAN Wallace brought a rough patch to an emphatic end in the club net competition on Sunday.

Wallace has posted several high scores in recent rounds, including 95, but returned to form with 77-13-64 to win the senior men’s net.

Cecil Brown (64) won the junior division and Helen Pomana the women’s section, her round highlighted by a two.

Gisborne ParkKANI Kingi tasted sub-80 success for the first time in nearly 20 rounds and the smell of victory went with it on Sunday.

Kingi shot matching nines of 39 for 78-1-2-66 and a 42-point stableford haul. It easily won him the men’s net and he capped his day with the men’s best second shot.

Al Nairne finished 2-up on the card to win the men’s par on Saturday. Pat Joseph’s 71 won the women’s net.

Men’s pennants

POVERTY Bay (1) and Tolaga Bay will contest the Oligoi Jug men’s interclub pennants final at the Poverty Bay course on May 29.

PB defeated Gisborne Park 5-3 while Tolaga Bay downed Patutahi 6-2 in the semifinals at Te Puia Springs on Sunday afternoon.

The semifinal spots were decided in the morning in the final round of round-robin play. Park beat PB (2) 5-3, Tolaga Bay defeated the hosts 6-2 and PB (1) shared the honours 4-all with Patutahi.

That saw Te Puia miss out on a semi berth and they played PB (2) to decide fifth and sixth. That ended 4-all, so the placing was shared.

Gisborne East Coast Senior Golfers Society is holding an invitation day at Poverty Bay on Monday. Tee-off is at 10am and there is a small entry fee.
