Poverty BayA POSTPONED partnership came up winning trumps a year later in the final of the Kahlenberg Cup women’s pairs yesterday.
Terry Allan (off a 31-handicap) and Jan Utting (13) defeated Jo Kerr (8) and Annabelle Sutton (36) 1-up in a final Allan described as “a great game”.
Allan and Utting were supposed to play together in the cup last year but Allan was away.
They combined forces this year and emerged triumphant in an absorbing match decided by Allan’s eight-foot downhill putt for bogey on the 18th.
Both winners have tasted Kahlenberg Cup success in the past — Utting as recently as 2014 with Morag Shanks; Allan “years and years ago” with sister Brigit McIldowie.
The 2016 winners also had a humdinger of a match in the semifinals, Utting making par on the first extra hole to knock out Trish Corson and 2015 champion Jan Steele.
Kerr and Sutton eliminated Miggles Shanks and Di Sherratt to advance to the final.

Gisborne ParkALAYNA Watene and Frieda Brown piled up the points to earn the No.1 seeding for the Benson Cup women’s pairs.
Watene anchored the effort as the pair finished the four-ball best ball qualifying with an impressive 51 points on Sunday.
Watene contributed plenty of those in winning the women’s stableford with 44 points. Saturday’s qualifying was topped by Noeleen Grace and Blanche Walker (44pts), who ended third overall.
Allan Nairne has stuck to his word and will not be back to defend the Te Kanawa Cup men’s pairs title. After winning last year with grandson Brad Reynolds, five-time champion Nairne was adamant that was it.
Reynolds will instead combine with Cliff Nepe in the 2016 edition. Qualifying is over the next two weekends.

Tolaga BayA QUADRUPLE bogey and a triple bogey jolted but couldn’t stop Jeremy Murphy from winning the stableford on Sunday.
Murphy still managed to post his best score well over a year to win with 86-23-63, for 41 points.

PennantsTHE Endeavour men’s interclub penannts trophy will take pride of place in the silverware cabinet at Patutahi after a dramatic final round at Poverty Bay on Sunday.
Chris Beattie and Dean Pohatu were the heroes of the day as Patutahi won the title for the first time since 2001, and only the third time in the history of the handicap matchplay series.
Patutahi went into the round with a six-point lead over Tahunga. Fittingly, these teams were drawn to meet in the round.
With 12 points up from grabs from the six matches, Patutahi knew what they had to do . . . get at least three points.
Defending champions Tahunga are tough off handicap on any course and that proved the case once again.
They won four matches but Beattie, unbeaten for the series, and Pohatu came to the rescue to get Patutahi over the line.
The players who contributed to Patutahi’s title success over the series were Beattie, Pohatu, Lyall Anania, George Brown, Tony Green, Ross Nichol, Selwyn Pohatu, Tom Hindmarsh and Wayne Baty.
