Poverty BayBILL Allen and Roy Skuse created Poverty Bay history with victory in the Barns-Graham Cup men’s pairs matchplay final on Sunday.
Allen and Skuse won the title in 1980 — 36 years ago — and have been partners in the prestigious competition since the early 1970s.
Their history-repeating performance was a thriller. They defeated Kim Gunness and Blair Tannahill on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff after Gunness parred the 18th to force extra holes.
A par-5 on the first hole by Skuse sealed victory in a doubleheader weekend of semifinals and finals.
Skuse and Allen beat Clive Dean and John Williams 4 and 3 in the semis on Saturday while Tannahill and Gunness knocked out Peter Humphreys and Mike Dodgshun 2 and 1.

Several subsidary trophies were also decided. Jim McGregor and Phil Wauchop won the Bryan Cup, beating Allan White and Walter Mackey 3 and 2 in the final. Wauchop, on 38, could well be the highest-handicapped player in the history of the BG but it was McGregor who anchored their campaign after being knocked out in the first round of the Barns-Graham Cup.
Twenty three holes were required to sort out the Barns-Graham Plate final between Thomas Donovan and Richard Foon, and Jimmy Situ and Mark Karalus. Donovan parred the fifth extra hole of a nearly-six-hour-long match for victory after Foon sank a 25-foot par putt on the 18th to force extra holes.
The BG plate flight was won by Kenny White and Nigel Jones.

Gisborne ParkONE of them knows what it’s like to win the final of the premier men’s pairs title at Gisborne Park. Two of them know what it’s like to lose it, and the other is about to experience one or the other.
Two duos remain in the 2016 Te Kanawa Cup men’s pairs — the champions to be crowned some time early Sunday afternoon.
Peter Cameron and Bruce Symes face Mike Hutton and Glen McKinnon in the handicap matchplay final.
Cameron, off an 8-handicap, will be giving the shots including 21 to Hutton.
He and Hutton know what it’s like to fall at the final hurdle in the quest for Te K glory. Cameron’s one and only final appearance ended in defeat while Hutton and McKinnon lost the 2015 final. For 15-handicapper, McKinnon, however, that’s a rare taste of Te K defeat. He has won the title several times.
Cameron and Symes, a 2015 semifinalist, earned their place in the last two with a 3 and 2 win over Daniel Collier and Pete Tamatea.
“We were 4-up at the turn and hung on for dear life,” said Cameron.
Hutton and McKinnon knocked out Pat Hogan and Chris Palmer 4 and 3 in a match decided on the greens.
They were locked all-square after nine holes but Hutton and McKinnon won three holes in a row on the homeward nine, making their opponents pay for some short-putt mistakes.
“They missed three critical putts,” said Hutton. “We combined well. I’d have a bad hole and Glen would come in . . . that’s the way it’s supposed to happen.”
The Benson Cup women’s pairs final is also on Sunday. Mihi Marino and Karen Hay face Jo Kerr and Marg Alley.

WaikohuJULIE Coker showed her golfing adaptability with victory in the course backwards competition on Sunday.
Coker completed the nine-hole reverse version of the course in a net-minus-stableford score of 33-21-12 to win by two from Kahu Tamanui (31-17-14).

Te Puia SpringsPETER Harrison found something special in his bag of golfing tricks in the July 3 club competition.
Harrison carded 75-24-61, for a mammoth 51 points, which won him the men’s stableford by 10 points. He parred half the course and capped his effort with a two on the 16th.
The veteran is no stranger to delivering hot rounds but this was extraordinary.
His previous sub-80 score was 78 in December of 2014 off an 18-handicap and the 75 was his low number since a 72 in February of 2014 — a round that featured nines of 41, 31.
Not surprisingly, Harrison also won the first round of the Busby Tray men’s pairs, with parner Raana Walker no doubt enjoying the ride.
