saveD his BEST TO LAST: Russell Kane, formerly of Gisborne but now a member of Manawatu's Rangitikei club, watches as his ball ends up about six feet from the hole to win him the BDO Gisborne/Emerre and Hathway nearest-the-pin challenge at the end of the Poverty Bay men's open on Saturday. Anaru Reedy's “Triple Crown” cake in winning the Poverty Bay Open on Saturday had extra thick icing.

Reedy became the first Gisborne Park member to win the Keiha Cup as open champion in 42 years.

Stu Barker won the Poverty Bay Open in 1980 and was the only Park player in the history of a tournament dating back to 1931 to achieve it until last weekend.

Barker defeated Eric Gordon 1-up that year.

Current Park member Tony Akroyd won it in 2007 but was a member of the Bay at the time.

Several Park members have made the final, including Base Westrupp, who lost 2 and 1 to Flaxmere's Dave Render in 1985, Brian Sexton, who lost 5 and 4 to Poverty Bay's Waka Donnelly in 1990 and Simon Whale, who lost 3 and 2 to Donnelly in 1992.

Reedy defeated Peter Kerekere 1-up in Saturday's final and is now reigning champion of all three of Tairāwhiti's major men's titles — the East Coast Open, King of the Coast and Poverty Bay Open.

In other section finals, Auckland-based district court judge Dave Sharp (Poverty Bay) beat Donnelly (Napier) on the 21st hole in the second 16; Wade Wesche (Mahia) beat Poverty Bay club captain Andy Hayward 2 and 1 in the third 16; Mark Norman beat Dean Robertson 2 and 1 in an all-Poverty Bay final of the fourth 16; Rios Moleta (Patutahi) beat Joe Brydon (Royal Wellington) 2 and 1 in the fifth 16; and Gray Clapham beat Poverty Bay clubmate Murray Smith 3 and 2 in the sixth 16.

Kino White returned to the winner's circle in claiming the Women's Handicap Cup title at the weekend.

White, who returned to Gisborne with husband John last year after several years in Australia, defeated Barb Woods 3 and 2 in the matchplay final.

The flight also went 16 holes, Jacque Akuhata-Nickerson triumphing over Carney Pipi.

Josh Hayes mixed everything from birdies to double bogeys but emerged with his personal best round on Sunday — 78-14-64.

It won him the net by one shot from Ian Loffler, who had two twos in his 80-15-65.

The Lunken Cup mixed pairs is on March 20 and the club is keen to see a full field as this event is used to selected Park's representatives in the ER Black interclub pairs.

The men's Handicap Cup champions will be sorted this weekend, with Anaru Reedy out to continue his Poverty Bay Open-winning form.

He faces Pete Stewart in the senior final while club president Wayne Carpendale meets Matt Henwood in the intermediate final and Jordan Coppen and Glynn Williams do battle in the junior final.

The first of the finals tees off at 9am.

In researching low rounds following Reedy's recent 8-under 64, Golf Roundup tracked down former Park member Vashon Karaka to confirm a sensational 18 holes he recorded “back in the day”.

Gold Coast-based Karaka — the senior men's club champion in 1997 — recalled shooting 10-under 62 off the blue tees with placing.

“I had 28 (8-under) on the front nine and three-putted 12 for a bogey from 10 feet, so it wasn't a perfect round.”

Karaka, who no longer plays, does not think the card was framed and acknowledged it was unofficial.
