Gray Clapham started his Reynolds Cup campaign in ideal style on Saturday, top qualifying for the top eight.
Clapham shot 83-15-68 to head the net qualifying on countback from Andy Abrahams, who carded 79-11-68.
The No.1 seed faces Dave Mettrick in round 1 of matchplay on Saturday.
Simon Jeune turned on the form that earned him the Poverty Bay men's open crown last year in winning the division 1 men's stableford on Sunday.
In a flawless round of scoring, Jeune had four birdies in his 4-under 68-3-65, for 43 points.
It could have been lower, he admitted, after collecting the Sunday School jackpot of a couple of hundred dollars for having two stableford points or more on every hole.
Jeune was one point ahead of Darren Patumaka, who posted 78-12-66, for 42 points.

Friday proved a successful dress rehearsal for Sunday for Selwyn Pohatu and Mike de Luze.
The pair posted 23 points apiece to win their sections of the Friday meat pack nine-hole stableford, then did it again on Sunday.
De Luze won the junior division with 81-17-64 while Pohatu had matching nines of 39 in his 78-11-67 to top the seniors.

John Hale headed a trio of players in the Sunday stableford.
Hale, Rongo Pomana and Mat Jefferd all returned 28 points but Hale won on countback.
