Poverty BayMARG Colebourne’s best round in nearly four years and Pete Anderson’s lowest score since returning to the game highlighted another successful Cancer Society Gisborne East Coast fundraising tournament on Sunday.

Colebourne shot 5-over par 79-16-64, for 46 points, to win the overall stableford — her first sub-80 since October of 2011.

Anderson’s combination of restrained power, accuracy off the tee and a putter that would have burned through steel alloy was rewarded with 2-over 74-9-65, for 43 points.

The major winner on the day, though, was the Gisborne East Coast cancer society centre, which was presented with nearly $4000, thanks to the efforts of Peter Florence and his small but dedicated organising.

Florrie, the driving force behind this tournament for many years, deflected praise, preferring to transfer it to the ongoing generosity of the 63 sponsors.

Every player walked away with a prize, among those a spot prize of a flight in a Tiger Moth.

A sub-par back nine holes earned Alex Kirkpatrick the Primo Cup title by just one stroke in the final on Saturday.

Kirkpatrick came home in 1-under-par 35 in shooting 76 off a 9-handicap. The format for the final is front-nine-net-minus-back-nine-stableford. Kirkpatrick ended with a score of 13, with Kath Willis (14) second on countback from Louise Shepherd.

Gisborne ParkPETER Koorey staked his claim as the Gisborne Park men’s shootout king with his third crown on Saturday.

Koorey topped the 19-man field, reduced by one player a hole over seven hours of net strokeplay, to add 2015 to his 2005 and 2013 successes.

A bogey on the 18th, getting a shot, was good enough for Koorey to eliminate defending champion Bo Huhu.

Shot of the final came from Ray Grace, who sank his second for an eagle-2 on the 332-metre fourth hole.

Karen McDonald survived an estimated six putt-offs to win the women’s shootout final for the second time.

McDonald and Lil McFlinn were the last two standing on the 18th tee. McFlinn missed a five-foot putt for par and McDonald slotted her 10-foot effort to seal it.

“I was lucky,” said McDonald, who used her cash prize to pay for the groceries.

Te Puia SpringsIT was a bittersweet Sunday for Amos Forrester.

Forrester won the men’s stableford with 40 points but was beaten by Ian Sykes in the semifinals of the Makarika Cup men’s matchplay.

Sykes’ final opponent is John Puha, who knocked out Dylan Young.

PatutahiWAI Koia was two different golfers on his way to victory in the men’s net on Sunday.

Koia shot a front-nine 45 and a back-nine 37, including two birdies, in his 82-18-64.

Two others also returned 64 – Ross Nichol and Butch McKenzie.

WaikohuJULIE Coker must have felt like a jack-in-the-box as she collected trophy after trophy at the club’s annual prizegiving on Saturday.

Coker’s successes included the senior women’s club championship title, most weekly wins, handicap singles, handicap pairs and Coates Trophy.

She and husband Aaron also achieved the husband-wife double in the shootout finals.

It was a case of male superiority in the annual pre-prizegiving Guys v Dolls challenge.

The Guys averaged 31.2 points to the Dolls’ 27 to easily win the stableford and also won the putting — 31.1 to the Dolls’ 34.2
