TWO FOR ONE: Brad Morgan and Paul Rickard know how to win major trophies as a combo. They did it in the Poverty Bay men’s open foursomes in 2018 and again last weekend in the Tom Shaw Memorial 27-hole open pairs tournament. Using a not-so-secret formula of que sera sera mixed with liquid injections and obviously skill, they clinched the overall net honours. It is the second time Rickard has won the title. He previously won it alongside the late John Whitehead. The tournament’s history dates back to the 54-hole Awapuni Shootout. Rickard also won that back in the day, paired with Jim Kerr. Club stalwart Shaw was a driving force behind the shootout. Picture supplied

Poverty Bay

It was not the feat that earned them the “unofficial” honours of world golfing upset of 2018, but it did prove that some dogs have more than one day.

Paul Rickard and Brad Morgan won the Tom Shaw Memorial 27-hole open pairs tournament on Sunday.

Having already reached their zenith as a combo with a jaw-dropping 36-hole gross victory in the Poverty Bay men’s foursomes in 2018, it was perhaps no surprise Rickard and Morgan would at least be in the hunt in a handicap event.

In the hunt? They were like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham rolled into one as they mowed their way through the field of around 90 hopefuls.

Rickard and Morgan finished with a 27-hole total net score of 91.5 for the nine holes of best-ball, nine of Canadian foursomes and nine of ambrose format.

Poverty Bay/Electrinet Park combo Dirk Bullivant and Jo Kerr were second overall on 93.084.

The mixed/women’s pairs section was won by Stefan Andreaasen and Sarah Eriksen on 98.25.

Snap-happy Gay Young took time out from her photography passion to top a couple of home links competitions yesterday.

Young’s 90-18-72 won the Coronation Medal silver division and Aotearoa Cup silver and bronze division sections while Sally Spence’s 97-23-74 won the Veterans’ Trophy. These scores go on to contest the national home links titles.

Young and Spence also won their 18-hole divisions of the LGU 3. Vicki Fraser won bronze II and Noreen Johnson was best of the 9-holers.

Tene Goldsmith heads the qualifying leaderboard for the Sean Shivnan Pharmacy men’s shootout.

As of last weekend, “Goldie” was sitting in the No.1 spot with a total of 205 (72, 65, 68) for his three best net scores (two off the white tees, one off the blues).

He was three shots ahead of Pat Butler (69, 67, 72) with Andy Hayward third on 209 (67, 70, 72).

Electrinet Park

Not today.

Matt Henwood could not match it off the stick with Daniel Collier in the Oligoi Jug men’s interclub pennants at Patutahi on Saturday.

But the Handicap Cup senior men’s final at their home Park course on Sunday proved a different story.

Henwood, who had the daunting task of playing Collier in a Park 1 and 2 derby at Patutahi on Saturday morning and was beaten 5 and 4, avenged his defeat the following day.

Getting six shots off his scratch handicap opponent, Henwood won the final 2 and 1.

The other men’s finals were closely contested. Shannon Toa defeated Shaun Pahina 2 and 1 in the intermediate final and Michael Bond beat Darrel Gregory 3 and 2 in the junior final.

The women’s final played on Saturday morning went to overtime. Kino White, giving 10 shots, pipped Carolyn Carpendale on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.

John White reckoned his “eyes were bleeding” watching how far the balls of Henwood and Craig Christophers were flying off the tee in Tuesday’s veterans’ stableford.

But they weren’t going far enough to beat White who won with 75-8-67, for 40 points.

Three players took advantage of the temporary extra par-3 the course has in the wake of Cyclone Gabrielle damage to the fourth hole.

James Witika, White and Henwood had two twos apiece.

TUESDAY — Veterans’ stableford: J White 40, W Carpendale 39, M Henwood 38, G Lowry 38, J Witika 37.

Twos: J Witika 2, M Henwood 2, J White 2, S Phillips, E Morley, W Carpendale, B Cameron.

Waikohu

Aaron Coker warmed up for this weekend’s Endeavour men’s interclub pennants round with victory in Sunday’s stableford. A 34-point haul was good enough to take the honours, one point ahead of Sonny Ritchie.

SUNDAY — Men’s stableford: A Coker 34, S Ritchie 33, P Milner 32, T Reeves 32.

Women’s putting: C Te Rito 31, P Rutene 32, M Tuapawa 32.

Twos: P Milner 2, T Reeves, A Coker.

Jackpot: P Milner.

COMING UP: SATURDAY, Endeavour men’s interclub pennants; SUNDAY, club competition.

Mahia

A superb second shot which set up a tap-in eagle-3 on the 10th hole for David Waihaki was a highlight of the Foster Cup men’s stableford on Sunday.

Waihaki’s 2-under helped him to 36 points but it was overshadowed by Bruce Maher topping round 2 of the cup with 40 points.

SUNDAY — Foster Cup men’s stableford, round 2: B Maher 40, K Ellison 38, D Waihaki 36, I Parker 36, B Cooper 35.

Connolly Cup women’s stableford: L Steel 36.

THURSDAY (April 13 ) — Women’s Iseki stableford, round 2: L Steel 31, V Kyle 30, L Morgan 30.

Chris Parker, Mana King and Abbie Davis were the Sunday winners.

Parker won the senior men’s stableford with 36 points, King the junior men’s with 34 and Davis the women’s competition with 35.

Peter Jex-Blake (23 points) topped some hot junior division scoring in the meat pack 9-hole stableford on Friday.

SUNDAY — Men’s stableford, senior division: C Parker 36, J Neilson 34, T Green 31.

Te Puia Springs

Pete Ngarimu’s consistency earned him the Jo Hale Memorial Cup title for 2023.

Ian Logan won the men’s stableford on Sunday with 37 points.

Hiria McClutchie had a commanding win in the first round of the President’s Cup women’s net. Her 93-25-68 was seven shots clear of the field.

SUNDAY — Men’s stableford: I Logan 37, J Forrester 36, H Rasmussen 36.

Men’s pennants

Tolaga Bay got their 2023 Endeavour men’s interclub pennants campaign off to a perfect start on Saturday.

All six of their team won their matches on home fairways.

Will Yates, Tim Adamson, Trent Higgs, Murray Yates, Watene Reedy and Pete Stevenson collected four points each for a maximum team total of 24 points.

Electrinet Park’s two teams had solid starts.

Glen McKinnon, Danny Boyle, Steve Phillips and Mike Bond had wins for Park (2).

Wayne Carpendale and Beau Toa contributed victories for Park (1) while Mike Christophers, Shannon Toa and Chris Fox halved their matches.

Poverty Bay had four winners — brothers Tene and Kit Goldsmith, Peter Hakiwai and Frank Ball.

Mahia had two wins courtesy of Bruce Maher and Roger Bremner while David Waihaki halved his match.

Tama Brown was the sole winner for Waikohu. Karauria Ruru and Richard Reeves squared their matches.

Jon Priestley and Mike de Luze ticked the win column for Patutahi (2) but it was a day to forget for Patutahi (1), who lost all six of their matches.

Round 2 is at Waikohu this Saturday.

Points after one round: Tolaga Bay 24, Poverty Bay 16, Park (2) 16, Park (1) 14, Mahia 10, Waikohu 8, Patutahi (2) 8, Patutahi (1) 0.
