Gisborne's New Zealand trampoline representative Kaiya Huta returned from the national championships at Tauranga with one gold medal, one silver and a hairline fracture to his ankle.

“We’re lucky that it was a hairline fracture as Kaiya is competing at the world age-group champs in St Petersburg in three weeks,” Gisborne Trampoline Club coach Doug Callahan said.

“He fractured his ankle during a training session with the New Zealand team, warming up for the tramp, after coming first on double mini in the junior international class and second on synchronised, with Ethan Bai from Auckland.

“He had his ankle put into a cast straight away and has been told he will be OK to compete at the world champs.”

Huta is competing on trampoline and, with Bai, on synchronised in Russia.

“Kaiya had to come from behind to win the double mini but once he did his passes perfectly, he was a clear winner,” said Callahan, whose 15-strong team came back with 14 medals — four gold, five silver and five bronze.

“Fifteen is a strong team for us at this time of the year, school holidays. The venue was the ASB Stadium, which was fantastic.”

Twins James and Danielle van Aswegen also came home with gold medals. James and Gisborne clubmate Liam Walters were first in the 13-and-14-year boys’ synchro while Danielle teamed with Claudia Shervell, from Auckland, to top the girls’ 13-14yr age group.

“Alissa Thomas and Raine Lamont-Milner also performed well,” Callahan said.

“Alissa is still showing that the sport is for all ages. She was in the 17-and-over division and finished second, and was unlucky not to win gold. She also won bronze in synchro, with Napier’s Abigail Bennett.

“Raine stepped up a grade to compete at youth international and won two bronze medals — on tramp and double mini.

“His form was good; now we have to work on his degree of difficulty.”

Mia Blot-Mouterde won silver in the 10-and-under girls’ tramp and, with Lilly Arnold, silver in the 11-12yr girls’ synchronised.
