The YMP A women and Lytton Old Boys top side went on scoring rampages in Gisborne hockey at the weekend, scoring 38 goals between them.

Sizeable scores were also recorded by Ngatapa, Gisborne Boys' High School and GMC Green.

LOB HPY Advisors overwhelmed YMP B 22-0 in the men's competition.

Jed Skuse was the chief destroyer with six goals, Jayden McKay and Elliot St John both scored five times, and Oliver Shivnan chimed in with a hat-trick.

“It was total dominance by LOB, although player numbers affected YMP, which LOB capitalised on,” hockey commentator Tony Scragg said.

YMP A trounced GMC Kowhai 16-1, Courtney Onekawa scoring seven times, Kodi Campbell getting a hat trick and Nancy Tarawa, a brace.

“It was 1-1 early on, but in the second half YMP piled on the goals, scoring in both general play and from penalty corners,” Scragg said.

“It shows YMP form at this early point in the season,” Scragg said.

Ngatapa were way too good for Waituhi, winning 11-0 in the women's competition.

Sinnead Flannery scored three, and Kate Pahina and Jamie Tombleson got a brace each.

“That was the biggest win Ngatapa have been able to achieve against Waituhi,” Scragg said.

“It will have boosted their confidence, after they competed well against YMP A the previous weekend.

“Ngatapa must be feeling good about themselves. Waituhi, on the other hand, have some defensive work to do.”

INA Contracting GMC Green comprehensively defeated Amber Dental Gisborne Girls' High School 5-0.

“GMC got off to an early lead,” Scragg said.

“Girls' High contained them for a while but it never looked like anything other than a GMC win.”

YMP B beat Te Aowera 3-0.

“YMP B have back-to-back victories to start the season, but it was closer than some expected,” Scragg said.

“Well done, TA, for keeping it tight.”

In the best of the men's games,YMP A and Waituhi fought out a pretty even contest, YMP winning 4-2.

“YMP led 2-0 after the first quarter, then Waituhi pegged one back and it was 2-1 for a fair while,” Scragg said.

“Then YMP jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second half and Waituhi left their run too late to catch them.”

In the other men's game, Gisborne Boys' High School beat LOB Masters 6-0.

“My son Aiden shouted dinner that night,” Scragg said.

“The Masters held them to a 1-0 lead at halftime, but in the second half we just ran out of legs.

“It shows those PE lessons during the week really pay off for the students.”
