THE goalscoring feats of Kohere Tupara, Brendon Lennane, Thomas Rutene, Mason O’Dwyer and Roschelle Koia featured in Gisborne weekend hockey.

Tupara scored five in YMP’s 17-0 win against Lytton Old Boys Masters, with Lennane and Rutene each scoring four times in the same match.

O’Dwyer scored four in THC’s 11-0 victory over Gisborne Boys’ High School, and Koia scored all five goals for YMP A against Ben Holden Fencing Ngatapa.

But the best contest of the weekend had no goals.

“The match of the round was between Emerre and Hathaway GMC and Te Aowera . . . no goals scored but what a good contest, and TA record their second point of the season,” commentator Tony Scragg said.

The Gisborne Girls’ High School match with YMP B was also a standout, Scragg said.

“It ended 3-2 to YMP, but because YMP played an unregistered player, Girls’ High get the points by default,” Scragg said.

The other results went the way of the form teams, by good margins.

GMC Green were impressive in their 8-2 victory over the capable GMC Kowhai.

“I think the Green result was particularly good because they were without the Campbell twins (Cory and Kodi) and still had a solid win,” Scragg said. “Against a team going as well as Kowhai, that was an impressive number of goals.”

YMP A and THC enjoyed further big wins in the men’s competition.

Scragg said the men’s games were all one-sided.

“LOB A would have been happy to pick up the points (from the 6-1 victory over YMP B) but they must still be conscious of the work they have to do if they want to successfully defend their premier title.”
