Gisborne’s Thomas a winner

Gisborne rider Angus Thomas won the mini motocross grade for seven-to-11-year-olds in the 2020 Dirt Guide Cross-country Series that concluded at Ohakuri, near Tokoroa, on Saturday.

Thomas finished ahead of Fergus Fulton (Taupiri) and Zach Davey (Ongarue).

In the senior ranks, Waikato rider Dylan Yearbury wound up an outstanding season of motorcycle racing by winning the delayed third and final round of the Dirt Guide Cross-country Series at Ohakuri to take the title.

Yearbury had finished runner-up to former Kiwi international Paul Whibley (Manawatu) at the series opener in June, but then had an impressive Round 2 victory in July.

The final round was set for August but was postponed by Covid-19 considerations until Saturday.

Whibley finished runner-up in the Dirt Guide series, with Tom Buxton (Helensville) third.

Yearbury, a 25-year-old builder from Cambridge, started the season with a runner-up finish to fellow Kiwi international Hamish Macdonald in the New Zealand Enduro Championships.

A workplace injury sidelined Yearbury for the first round of the New Zealand Extreme Off-Road Championship, but he won all three of the following rounds on his Husqvarna TE300i to take the national title. He also won the inaugural series in 2018.
