Gisborne Trampoline Club competitors dominated the central region championships at the Electrinet Sports Centre, winning 31 gold medals, 13 silver and two bronze.

Twelve qualified for nationals“It was a fantastic effort,” Eastland Port Gisborne Trampoline Club coach Doug Callahan said. “It was also a qualifying competition for the nationals and we have qualified 12. Two more, Danielle van Aswegen and Taylan Barber, could qualify . . . they have two more competitions to come.

“Leah Scholefield and Raine Lamont-Milner — who each won three golds, as did Hannah Scholefield, Riker Rolls, Ronan Wallace, Brea Low and James van Aswegen — used it as preparation for the Australian nationals next month.”

Scholefield won the sub junior international tramp, the sub junior international double mini and teamed up with Olivia Lyon (from Auckland’s Extreme club) to place first on synchronised.

Scholefield sisters improving“Leah has qualified for the Indo Pacifics and is well on track for the Australian nationals,” Callahan said. “She has improved form on double mini. Her sister Hannah was another top performer. She has always had the potential and is starting to fulfil it. Hannah has qualified for the nationals.”

Callahan said Wallace, Lamont-Milner and Rolls also impressed.

“Riker’s only eight but is coming to the fore. He’s got a great attitude, loves training and soaks up everything you tell him. Ronan has returned with a bang after one year off. His form, degree of difficulty and skill were all there.”

Low, competing in the 17-and-over division, posted marks which would have qualified her for the Indo Pacifics in double mini.

“Unfortunately the central region champs were not qualifying comps for Indo Pacifics,” Callahan said. “If she repeats her marks at the North Island champs, she will qualify for Indo Pacifics.”

Two golds to KaiyaKaiya Huta had to be content with two golds.

“He didn’t have someone to partner in synchro, but his performance on tramp was exceptional. He did a degree of difficulty of 11.3 on his first voluntary and I said if he did it neatly he could attempt 13, which is a huge jump, and he nailed it . . . a triple somersault with a half-twist out. That’s the highest DD in New Zealand at sub junior international level.

“His goal is the Junior Olympics and I wouldn’t put it past him to make it.”
