Racing comes back to the MTF Awapuni Raceway on Saturday night with the Professional Fleet Maintenance Production Saloon car Champion of Champions.

The event has attracted a field of 15 drivers, with several from outside the district.

The lineup so far includes 37G Blake Dear, 13R Justin Driver, 15G Dale Bellingham, 17G Anton McKay, 23W Nigel Potter, 25H Mark Levin, 27R James Cunningham, 33W Matt Houlden, 64G Jack Miller, 65V Sam Gilchrist, 66G Regan Jones, 72W Brendon Harrison, 97G Sarah Pearson, 97W William Bayliss and 201V Jason Barton.

“That should be a competitive field of cars,” said club president Sam Hughes.

“We are expecting a couple more to join them.

“Anton McKay (17G) has been in excellent form in racing to date on the Gisborne track this season, and Blake Dear (37G) has also been right on the pace,” he said.

The speedy F2 Midgets will also be on the programme Saturday night.

That field includes drivers from the Mount and Auckland, the likes of 17M Scotty Cossey, 47M Brynn Jackson, 51M Brad Curtin, 71M Campbell Hayes, 81M Dion Kendall, 94A Troy Jeffries and 96M Tylar Browne.

“We expect there will be more of them added,” Hughes said.

“Hopefully, around a dozen cars and drivers.

“They will be battling it out over three heat races, a pole shuffle and finish off with a 20-lap feature race.”

The support programme includes Classic stock cars, stock cars and Youth ministocks.

“The weather looks exceptional for the night, perfect.”

Gates open at 5pm, with racing from 6pm.
