Gisborne’s Joe Hogan and Rob Hayes were first and second in the premier singles event on the last two days of a three-day golf croquet tournament in Mount Maunganui this month.

Hogan won all nine of his games in the secondary draw to take first place, while Hayes made it a Barry Memorial Croquet Club quinella by taking second.

Hogan and Hayes had combined for the doubles, held on the first day, but finished out of the placings.

After losing three games to lower-ranked teams in the morning, they won their three afternoon games against some of the strongest pairs competing. However, the losses kept them from advancing.

Hayes and Hogan will compete at the golf croquet nationals in Nelson early next month. Later in January, Hogan and another Barry Memorial clubmate, Paul Stuart, will compete as a pair in the association croquet nationals in Mount Maunganui.

Former association croquet singles world champion Hogan is ranked fourth in New Zealand in golf croquet and eighth in association croquet.
