The future of Tairāwhiti surfing was on full display last Saturday when Gisborne Boardriders Club hosted the first of three Junior Series events over the 2026 season.

Seventy-nine competitors took part in what was a showcase of impressive young surfing at the Creek surf break at Makorori.

“It also demonstrated the strength of the local surf community that continues to support and nurture the next generation,” club spokeswoman Anneleen Van Damme said.

“The Under-10 division was a standout, with several competitors surfing in their first Junior Series event and confidently taking on some beautiful waves.”

Glassy, clean conditions greeted surfers in the morning before gustier winds arrived later in the afternoon.

“Despite the changing conditions, competitors across all divisions rose to the challenge, and the younger surfers in particular impressed with their enthusiasm, determination and growing skillsets,” she said.

Van Damme also complimented competition director Matt Tong “for his leadership”, along with the hard work put in by judges, parents and volunteers “to ensure the day ran smoothly from start to finish”.

“The event was a reflection of what makes Gisborne surfing special — a community willing to give time and energy to support its young surfers.”

The club was grateful to everyone who contributed.

“We look forward to seeing these young surfers continue to grow and shine throughout the year.”

The club will host the Tairawhiti junior championships on February 13, and the Tairawhiti High School Championships on March 4.
