It’s Excitement-plus for speedway fans in Gisborne with news that current New Zealand champion Asher Rees will race with a G on his car this weekend in the North Island superstock

championships.

Just under 100 cars started the qualifying rounds of the championships last night at the Paradise Valley raceway in Rotorua.

Among the racers is Asher Rees, now 1NZG, after he left his previous club Kihikihi and joined his father Peter (10G) and brother Ethan (127G) as members of the Gisborne Speedway Club.

Joining the Rees family this weekend in the titles will be current North Island champion Jamie Hamilton (9G), Brodie and Tyler James (89G and 87G), and Regan Penn (235G), who won the NZ superstock Grand Prix title this season.

Gisborne Speedway Cub president Sam Hughes said the addition of Asher to the superstock class in Gisborne was great news.

"It's the first time we have had a 1NZ registered to our club in that class.

"It's great to see the whole Rees family racing for our club again, after they raced so well in stockcars for Gisborne several years ago.

"The Gisborne contingent racing in Rotorua this weekend is definitely a very strong line-up and we wish them all the very best."

Peter Rees said it was "fantastic" to have both his sons back under the G banner again.

"I'm very stoked.

"We've been there together before in Gisborne and it’s so good to have us all back there again.

"I think the G cars have a better chance this weekend than those from other clubs, but we'll need a little bit of luck," Rees said.

"It should be good though. The Rotorua track is always good to us, just like Gisborne.

"We're looking forward to being back at the Gisborne track in three weeks."
