MARK Jefferson awaits his semifinal opponent with interest after a men’s club championship matchplay victory double over the weekend.

Jefferson defeated Don Griffin 4 and 3 in the senior division on Saturday, then put paid to Glenn Morley 2 and 1 on Sunday.

All but top qualifier William Brown played the first round on Saturday.

Brown had a bye into the quarters where he will meet Pete Anderson, who needed an extra hole to see off Hayden Keast.

The winner of the Brown-Anderson match faces Jefferson.

In other first round clashes, Morley beat George Brown on the 19th, Andrew Higham brushed aside Brad Morgan 7 and 6, Stefan Andreassen pipped Thomas Donovan on 18, Simon Jeune cruised to a 6 and 5 win over Darren Patumaka and Dean Twigley played only a few holes before opponent Alex Kirkpatrick pulled out because of injury.

Defending intermediate champion Zach Rolls got a first-round fright from Don Wright. The teenager escaped with a 19th-hole win after a Wright three putt on 18 let him off the hook.

Top seed John Van Helden also had to do it tough, beating Alan Williams on the 18th.

Another intermediate front-runner Andy Hayward had a surprisingly comfortable 4 and 3 win over Peter Hakiwai.

Others to move into the last eight were Vance Richardson, 2020 runner-up Cliff Poole, Greg Hawea, John Kerekere and Pat Butler.

Reigning junior champion Larry Foster exited in spectacular fashion. He was 4-up with four to play against Bill Allen only to lose all four and the 19th.

Hamish Williams ousted Pete Goodwin in the only other junior match.

Top seed Murray Smith, Warwick Thompson, Mark Stewart, Kim Travers, Dave Mettrick and Jimmy Nepe-White had byes.

DEFENDING champion Anaru Reedy filled the first of the semifinal spots in the senior men’s club championships but he didn’t have it all his own way in getting there.

Deevon Gray gave Reedy a workout in their quarterfinal clash, earning plenty of respect from his opponent.

“Deevon played awesome, tough match, great match,” Reedy said on the Gizzy Park Golf Facebook page after a 2 and 1 win.

The rest of the senior quarterfinals are still to be played.

The only other match of the weekend was a junior quarterfinal — Barry Cox seeing off Shaun Pahina to book a semifinal against Tony Leggett.

All semifinals are on Saturday, September 25.

The Power Connections men’s shootout final has been put back to Saturday, November 6, due to weeks lost to Covid-19 alert levels.

The qualifying series — in which players count their four best nets off the white tees and four best off the blues — has a new leader.

Matt Henwood shot 78-14-64 to go top on 559, well clear of Zane Boyle (571) and Craig Christophers (572).

Tracey Ford and Maria Sheridan won the Meg Gordon women’s foursomes on Saturday, carding a net 66.5.

PETE Bremner has an arm’s-length list of senior men’s club championship titles.

But there are a few pretenders keen to deny him in the 2021 edition.

Bremner faces Chris Taurima for a place in the final while Gid Pitman and Wade Wesche will decide the other spot.

Roger Bremner is in the intermediate final after disposing of Wayne Wesche.

David Waihaki stayed alive with victory over Bernie Crowley and will next meet the winner of the Graham Shapland-Bruce Maher clash.

The junior and junior A finalists have been confirmed.

Peter Smyth eliminated Bryce Cutler in the junior semifinals and will play Jake Te Amo, who knocked out Ian Parker.

Tegal Smith beat Joe Tihore in the junior A semifinals to set up a final against Rusty Smith, who defeated Duncan Bremner.

PERFECTION was not enough as the semifinalists were confirmed in Patutahi’s club championships on Sunday.

Hamish Harris aced the 128-metre 15th hole in his intermediate men’s semi against Pat Molloy.

However, Harris was unable to ice the ace cake as Molloy comfortably won the match to set up a semifinal against George Brown, who denied reigning champion Tony Green a successful title defence.

“George played bad, I played worse,” Green said of his 3 and 2 loss.

Tom Hindmarsh beat Sam Marsh in their quarterfinal and will next meet Adam Brodie who beat Pat Hokianga.

Brothers at arms went the way of the younger sibling in the senior men’s quarterfinals.

Hukanui Brown stayed on track for title three-peat but was pushed all the way by older brother Eddie.

A birdie on the last decided it in top seed Hukanui’s favour and booked him a semifinal date with Selwyn Pohatu, who knocked out Jon Priestley.

The other semi pits No.2 seed Dwayne Russell against Regan Hindmarsh — Russell surviving an 18-hole tussle with Chris Beattie and Hindmarsh knocking out Lyall Anania.

Junior top seed Pete “Chopper” Summersby stayed alive with a win over Sai Eder. His semi opponent is Gerry Maude, who accounted for Graham Holland.

Lethal leftie Sijtze Mohlmann is still in the hunt after a win over Mason Smith. Standing in his way is Dave Fieldhouse, who eliminated Peter Briant.

Two intermediate women’s quarterfinals were played. Lorraine Haisman defeated Colleen Wesche and will play daughter Andrea Haisman in the semis.

Victory over Anahera Stills-Hindmarsh advanced Jan Ewart to a semi duel with Kath McLatchie.

Both finals are over 36 holes and tee-off is 9am.

The endeavour final between Tom Smith and Aaron Coker is over 18 holes and tees off at 11am.

Waikohu’s open closing day, which was to be held on Saturday, has been cancelled.
