NEW member Graeme Dickey is hunting one of the most sought-after pieces of men’s silverware as his first success at Electrinet Park.

Dickey, whois from Whakatane but has been playing regulary with Park’s Friday crew, has combined with Darrel Gregory for the 2021 Te Kanawa Cup men’s pairs.

The duo have set the pace in 18-hole best-ball stableford qualifying being held throughout May.

They designated May 7 as their qualifier and rattled up 46 points to top the 14 combos to have posted scores so far.

Two points behind them are another relative newcomer in James Witika, who was bitten by the golfing bug through the Park’s Thursday twilight competition. Witika has combined forces with former Te K winner Dave Harrison and they compiled 44 points on Sunday.

Witika anchored the effort with a men’s stableford-winning 39 points.

The Te Kanawa competitors are vying for a place in the top 16 and those sitting near the bottom of scores posted so far have a nervous wait for those yet to play.

Pairs in the women’s equivalent, the Benson Cup, are in matchplay action this weekend.

JAN Steele and Kirsty Shaw are the No.1 seeds in the 2021 edition of the Kahlenberg Cup women’s pairs.

Steele and Shaw top qualified with a best-ball stableford total of 42 points, with Mary Allan and Sue Kemp second.

Qualifying was held on Monday and Wednesday and pairs were able to play either or both days to post a qualifying score.

Kemp was the bounceback story of qualifying. She posted a mere 18 points in horrible weather conditons on Monday but made up for that emphatically on Wednesday with 36.

The first round of matchplay is on Wednesday next week.
