Adrian Wyrill was the first player into the intermediate quarterfinals. The Poverty Bay Heartland rugby championship squad member defeated Paul Wellard on the 17th.
The two intermediate play-in rounds were completed. Sefo Fonoti beat Derek Craven 2 and 1 while Ray Grace knocked out Tony File on the 18th.
Grace now faces a round 1 match against No.1 seed Danny Boyle. Fonoti takes on No.2 Tom Reynolds.
First-round matches in the senior, intermediate and junior divisions are to be played on or prior to Sunday.
The women’s club championship qualifying rounds are under way. Qualifying is over three rounds with a player counting her best 18-hole score.

Boyle has a net total of 571 for his best eight rounds (four off the white tees, four off the blues).
Tom Reynolds is on 575 and Steve Phillips completes the top three on 576.

SALLY Spence got her defence of the intermediate title off to an ideal start in women’s club championship qualifying this week.
Spence earned the No.1 seeding in the intermediate division with 95.
As expected, white-hot favourite Tessa McDonald easily topped the senior division — the Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay representative and reigning champion carding a routine 1-over 75.
Pen Wanklyn’s 100 headed the junior division and she and defending champ Vonnie Fletcher were among five players to advance straight to the second round.
A double-bogey start and an out-of-bounds bogey on the 12th were minor blips for William Brown as he predictably set the pace in the Dodgshun Cup series on Saturday.
Brown had what most of his clubmates would view as an inexplicable 7 on the par-5 first but typically stormed back with birdies on the fourth, ninth and 11th en route to 2-under 70.
His playing partners were left marvelling at Brown’s 12th hole. He drove out of bounds but smashed a driver-hit second shot with his provisional ball to 15-foot of the hole and lipped out for what would have been a memorable par.
Brown ended the day six shots clear of second-placed Stefan Andreassen in the senior division, with Thomas Donovan a stroke back.
Peter Hakiwai’s 81 put him one shot ahead of Vance Richardson in the intermediate division, with Darryn White third on 85.
Bill Allen headed the juniors with 96, followed by Murray Smith’s 97 and Peter Goodwin and Jimmy Nepe-White on 98.
The Dodgshun Cup is a four-round gross and net series, with players counting their three best scores.
Qualifying for the men’s club championships is on Saturday, August 14, which is also round 3 of the Dodgshun Cup.
Seniors will qualify over 36 holes and the other divisions will qualify over 18 holes.
