THREE father-son combos remain in the hunt for Te Kanawa Cup glory after a busy weekend of men’s pairs handicap matchplay.

Of the five father-son pairs among the 21 qualifiers, two were ousted.

Cliff Nepe and John Collier ended the hopes of Geoff and Tamanui Hill in a sudden-death playoff round 2 match on Sunday.

Fourth qualifiers Anthony and Shaun Pahina were also round 2 casualties, beaten on the 18th by 20th-seeded Glynn and Alan Williams.

The Williamses were among 10 pairs who had round 1 matches on Saturday. They beat Paul Wellard and Rob Taylor to set up a father-son duel with the Pahina men.

Top seeds Steve and Zach Rolls advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2 and 1 win over Ray Grace and Terry Pointon — teenager Zach continuing the form he showed in a junior men’s club championship match at Poverty Bay the day before.

The “Rolls Royces” next face Rod Moore and Dave Rameka, who charged home against Roger McGann and Brian Lumsden-Nicholls.

Moore and Rameka trailed 3-down after 13 holes but won the next four. and Moore sealed the win by putting his second shot near-stiff on the 18th for birdie.

Anaru Reedy showed why he is on a +3 handicap. The first-season Park player and greenkeeper Pete Tamatea defeated Wally Whangapirita and Steve Phillips on the 18th — Reedy slotting a 20-footer from off the green for birdie to seal the deal.

There was no “Boyle-over” in the match between the second and 18th seeds — No.2-ranked Danny and Zane Boyle comfortably accounting for brothers Selwyn and Quentin Peneha 4 and 3.

By far the oldest combo left, Barry Cox and Jack Glassford, knocked out Tony File and Tom Reynolds to set up a quarterfinal with the Boyles.

Jack will be out to deny them a Te K Cup-winning feat he achieved with his father — the late Boo Glassford — many moons ago.

Nepe/Collier avenged last year’s loss to Bo Huhu and Pete Koorey in round 1 on Saturday. They backed that up on Sunday against the Hills, although needed three extra holes in a pressure-cooker clash.

Their reward was a Sunday quarterfinal clash with Reedy and Tamatea.

The eighth quarterfinalists are yet to be found. Derek Craven and Glen McKinnon will battle Dave Harrison and Tom Teneti this Saturday for that slot and a match against the Williams combination.

GAY Young (15-handicap) and Vicki Fraser (28) are the 2020 Kahlenberg Cup women’s pairs champions after a nail-biting extra-hole final against Leigh Fletcher (30) and Peri Gayford (22) yesterday.

Young, after putting her third shot through the back of the par-5 first extra hole, chipped on, then sank a 9-foot putt for par to seal the victory.

There was little between the pairs throughout the handicap match, which was all-square at the nine-hole halfway point.

For Young, it was a fifth Kahlenberg Cup title dating back to 2001.

Fraser earned her second Kahlenberg crown 20 years after her first.

In the semifinals, Young and Fraser beat Sally Spence and Colleen Skuse while Fletcher and Gayford ousted Jan Utting and Fay Pell.

Sue Kemp and Birgitt Whyte defeated Pauline Zame and Verna Harnett in the Kahlenberg Plate final.

Teenager Ellen Ball bettered her personal best round at the Awapuni Links three times in three days. Ball shot 4-over 78 on Friday, followed it up on Saturday with 78, then improved it again on Sunday with 76.

THE new handicap system and the advent of winter are likely reasons for modest weekend scoring at the ’Tahi over the weekend.

With most players’ handicaps having reduced under the World Handicap System and a decided decrease in run on the course, net 68 was the best competition score on Sunday.

That effort came from Mike de Luze, who won the junior division and had a two.

Lyall Anania’s 78-7-71 was good enough to win the senior men’s net while Denise Johnston posted 73 to top the women’s competition.

HIRIA McClutchie and Mark Higham wore winning smiles in Sunday club competitions.

LARRY Green and Marg Tuapawa enjoyed success over both days of the golfing weekend.

Green won the men’s gross while Tuapawa won the women’s net in the club open competition on Saturday.

The pair joined forces with Val Grace the next day to win the ambrose stableford with 43 points on countback from Ike Ruru, Percy Milner and Audrey Tamanui-Nunn.
