POVERTY BAY

Richard Foon carded one of the men’s rounds of the year net-wise on Saturday but it bears a possibly concerning resemblance to his performance almost a year ago.

Foon fired 77-13-64 off the blue tees to take an iron grip on Division 2 of the Dodgshun Cup men’s gross series.

It was his best score since July of last year — 77 off the white tees — and put him a distant 15 shots ahead of second-placed Colin Simpson after two of the four Dodgshun Cup rounds.

Foon is by no means a certain winner as players count their three best scores, meaning if they play all four rounds, they get to drop their worst one.

Last year, Foon won his Dodgshun Cup division but only after a disastrous third round, which doubled as qualifying for the club champs. He failed to qualify for the intermediate champs, then went out the next day and played 14 shots better to seal Dodgshun Div 2 glory.

The same scenario is in play this year, with club championship qualifying  and Round 3 of the Dodgshun on Saturday, and Round 4 of the Dodgshun on Sunday.

History repeating is  and isn’t on Foon’s agenda.

Dave Jenkins leads the race for the Dodgshun Cup Division 1 silverware although he won’t be crowing about his 170 (89, 81) total in a series so far missing almost all of the club’s top players.

Most of them will be in action this Saturday although reigning Dodgshun Cup Div 1 champion William Brown can’t defend it as he did not play in the first two rounds.

The door is open for Glenn Morley. He carded 77 in a small Round 2 field.

Division 3 is tight. Bill Simpson, on 192 (95, 97) leads by one stroke from Mark Stewart (96, 97).

Brown is defending his senior men’s club championship title but with Zach Rolls moving into the senior ranks, he won’t be retaining the intermediate crown.

Foon led some impressive scoring as the course became slightly friendlier at the weekend.

Nick Richardson won the Division 1 men’s stableford on Sunday with 75-8-67 for 41 points, followed by Pete Anderson with 75-6-69 for 39.

Odette Thompson and Janet Muir posted 39-point efforts in yesterday’s women’s stableford.

Sally Spence won the women’s par on Monday with 93-23-70 for +4.

ELECTRINET PARK

The weather may have severely impacted the 2023 Te Kanawa Cup men’s pairs but the hunger to lift one of the club’s most popular trophies remains.

The Te K is almost down to the last four duos.

Three semifinal spots have been confirmed — top qualifiers Tom Reynolds and Darrel Gregory (aka Faint Hearted); Mike Christophers and Ben Holt (My Colt); and father and son Anthony and Shaun Pahina (Feral Crescent Boys).

Reynolds and Gregory knocked out Mike Bond and Heath Tupara (Hackers) 2 and 1 in their quarterfinal clash.

Christophers and Holt had an 18-hole battle with 2022 runners-up Ian Loffler and Steve Webb (Good, Bad, Ugly) — Loffler his own harshest critic after missing a 4-foot putt that would have won the hole and taken it to sudden death . . . “I sucked.”

The Pahina whānau beat another family combo — Steve Rolls and son Zach (Rolls Royce) — 3 and 2 to set up a semi with Christophers and Holt.

Reynolds and Gregory face the winners of the match between brothers Selwyn and Quentin Peneha (Peneha Power) and Derek “Red” Craven and Josh Taylor (Redskins) to be played this Saturday.

Qualifying for the men’s club champs continues to Sunday next week.

Scores of note so far include Selwyn Peneha’s 75 in the senior division, Reynolds’ 80 in the intermediate division and Mason Emery’s excellent 82 in the juniors.

The first round of qualifying for the women’s club champs was held last weekend. The second round is on Saturday.

A date for the final of the Benson Cup women’s pairs is to be confirmed. Tracey Ford and Jo Kerr face Di Webb and Tai Aramakutu in the decider.
