DEREK “Red” Craven has seen some great putting in his time, but nothing like what his partner produced as they booked their place in the semifinals of the Te Kanawa Cup men’s pairs on Sunday.

“He absolutely putted the lights out,” Craven said of Glen McKinnon after they disposed of father-son combination Glynn and Alan Williams 2 and 1 in the quarterfinals of the handicap matchplay series.

“I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Two-time Te Kanawa Cup winner McKinnon (2005 and 2006 with Tony Gledhill) and Craven had a busy weekend of golf in making the last four.

They beat Tom Teneti and Dave Harrison 3 and 2 in a catch-up clash on Saturday, then followed it up with the Williamses’ scalp.

Craven and McKinnon’s efforts earned them a semifinal match against Team Rolls Royce — father and son Steve and Zach “Attack” Rolls.

Fifteen-year old Zach has been the anchor of this No.1-seeded combo and highlighted their 4 and 3 quarterfinal defeat of Rodney Moore and Dave Rameka with a birdie-3 on the stroke one 10th hole.

It is rumoured Steve is growing his hair until they are beaten and that Craven told him to “bring a razor” to this Sunday’s semi.

Second seeds Danny Boyle and son Zane needed an extra hole to dispose of veterans Jack Glassford and Barry Cox in their quarterfinal.

Boyle senior admitted he played “like a goat” and that Boyle junior “kept us in it”.

The Boyles and the Rolls are out to achieve a rare father-son victory in this prestigious competition. Glassford did it with father Boo 59 years ago.

The Boyles next face the lowest-handicapped player in the field — Anaru Reedy, off a +3, and greenkeeper Pete Tamatea.

Reedy and Tamatea blew away 2019 runners-up Cliff Nepe and Johnny Collier 5 and 4 in their quarterfinal, and Reedy warmed up for Sunday with a six-birdie, 4-under 68 on Tuesday

The Fletcher Cup subsidiary is also down to the semis.

Ray Grace and Terry Pointon face Anthony Pahina and son Shaun while Tony File and Tom Reynolds take on Geoff Hill and son Tamanui, who were taken to 18 holes by lone soldier Steve Phillips in the quarters.

R Moore 39.

AN 11th-hour call-up proved a winning one as the Barns-Graham Cup men’s pairs top 32 were sorted on Saturday.

Glenn Morley answered an SOS for Gray Clapham just an hour before tee-off in the four-ball best-ball qualifying round.

Clapham’s original partner, Dave Pirimona, had to pull out with a hand injury.

Morley was not intending to play until club captain John van Helden contacted him on behalf of Clapham.

It proved a fateful phone call, as Morley answered in the affirmative, and he and Clapham racked up 44 stableford points to earn the No.1 spot on countback from Stefan Andreassen and Alan Baldwin.

Darren Patumaka and Thomas Donovan grabbed the No.3 spot with 43 points and look a dangerous combo — they were first and second in the division 1 men’s stableford the following day.

There were five pairs on 42 points — Andy Abrahams and Bruce Talbot; Clive Dean and John Williams; Peter Clayton and Duncan Bush; Andy Putnam and Brent Colbert; and Mark Jefferson and Michael Callaghan.

Among the 32 qualifiers were defending champions Arthur Bacon and Darryl Grant, on 38 points, while Reid Fletcher and former BG Cup winner Gerald Kemp snatched the 32nd and last spot on 37.

Van Helden deserved a drink from the top qualifiers for his efforts but won’t get a chance to win the title himself. He and Stu Harbottle were among the nine pairs who missed the cut.

Handicap golf would have been good enough to take the honours in the Hutchinson Cup women’s matchplay qualifying round yesterday.

As it was, Jan Utting’s 88-12-76 earned her the No.1 spot. She also won the LGU silver division and the gross and the net in the annual Audrey Kelly Salver Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay Women’s Golf district event . . . and capped it off with a two.

Sandy Armstrong reversed the 2019 result with victory over Chrissie McDonald in the final of the Juliet Rickard Memorial Jug 9-holers’ matchplay.

IT was a case of “two-meke” in the club competition on Sunday — particularly from Tony Green.

The “Green Machine” won the senior men’s net with 75-8-67, his round featuring twos on the 140-metre sixth hole, 165m 12th and 128m 15th.

Green also got the jackpot on a day where there were 12 twos, plus an eagle from Dwayne Russell.

Martin Weaver won the junior men’s net with 69 and Andrea Haisman the women’s net with 71.

ROBYN Ngatai and Amos Forrester were convincing winners of club competitions on Sunday.

Ngatai’s 93-23-70 was five strokes clear of the next best net in the President’s competition third round and LGU.

Forrester was the only player to better his handicap in the men’s stableford. He won with 38 points.

ANOTHER Sunday, another win for Kahu Tamanui.

Tamanui continued his rampant post-lockdown form with 41 points and an emphatic victory in the all-in stableford on Sunday.
