Poverty BayTHOMAS Donovan and Bruce Talbot will decide the 2019 Reynolds Cup men’s handicap matchplay championship.
Donovan came home strong to eliminate Alan Baldwin in a 19-hole semifinal tussle on Saturday while Talbot beat Mark Stewart 4 and 3.
Donovan trailed Baldwin 3-down with five holes to play but turned on par golf over the back nine to force extra holes.
The 5-handicapper, who had to give Baldwin more shots than the first round of tequilas at a bachelor party — 19 in all — made the 19th-hole green for regulation as his opponent struggled and ultimately conceded defeat.
Talbot finished his match in style with a birdie on the 15th.
The final is scheduled for Sunday.
Subsidiary cup finalists were also sorted out.
Cyril Payn and Andy Hayward will pit skills for the Willock Cup while James McGregor and Colin Christie are the Low Bros Cup finalists.
Sally Spence’s hot round yesterday brought her multiple success.
Spence fired 87-19-68, thanks largely to a front nine holes of 3-over 40 including birdies on the second and eighth holes.
Her efforts topped the Coronation Medal, Aotearoa Cup and Veterans’ Cup net competitions.

For the second Sunday in a row, he made birdie on the 274-metre par-4 and this time went on to win the men’s stableford with 76-11-65, for 41 points.
Gary “Bubba” Watson was a point back in second and no doubt will be considering throwing a few bucks on the real “Bubba” in his bid to win a third Masters at Augusta over the weekend.

That was the story for Mahia on Saturday as heavy rain destroyed any chance of the opening round of the Poverty Bay-East Coast Endeavour men’s interclub pennants going ahead.
It should, hopefully, be all go this weekend for the national women’s teams’ net qualifying round — the top four players representing the club in Hawke’s Bay on April 29.
Mahia men head to Tolaga Bay on Saturday for round 2 of the Endeavour pennants.
InterclubMAHIA put mighty in front of its name with a victory in the E.R. Black Cup annual interclub competition hosted by Tolaga Bay on Sunday.
The Mahia team made up for not being able to play at their home course on Saturday due to the weather by claiming the prestigious Canadian mixed pairs aggregate stableford interclub crown.
Mahia’s five combinations totalled 185 points — seven points clear of runners-up Te Puia Springs.
Fairlane Wesche and Bruce Maher and Wayne Wesche and Renee Hiko led the way for the Mahitians. Both pairs contributed 39 points while Colleen Wesche and Pete Bremner had 38, Maria Wesche and Bernie Crowley 36 and Maraea Wesche and Tegal Smith 33.
The Springs were one point ahead of Tolaga Bay (177), followed by Poverty Bay on 175, defending champions Waikohu 173, Gisborne Park 162 and Patutahi 150.
The best overall pair on the day was Tolaga Bay’s Dan Maitai and Thelma Waru, who had 41 points.
The E.R. Black Cup dates back to 1959 and it was the first time Mahia had won it since 2014.
Waikohu will host the cup next year.
Men’s pennantsPatutahi made a huge statement of intent in the opening round of the 2019 Oligoi Jug men’s interclub pennants at Te Puia Springs on Saturday.
The ’Tahi boys landed uppercuts, a couple of haymakers and a flurry of jabs on defending champions Poverty Bay (1) in an 8-4 team victory.
The teams were locked 2-all after the morning foursomes but Patutahi took control in the afternoon singles — Eddie Brown Junior beating 2018 player of the pennants William Brown 3 and 1, Hukanui Brown defeating Pete Anderson and Tony Akroyd outgunning Simon Jeune.
The only PB player to emerge unscathed was Pete Kerekere, who saved his side from a singles whitewash with victory over Jace Brown.
Patutahi ended the round joint top with Tolaga Bay, who won their neighbourhood-bragging-rights battle with Te Puia 8-4 — Taine Lincoln and uncle Tere Lincoln finishing the day with two-from-two records for Tolaga.
Gisborne Park and Poverty Bay (2) shared the spoils 6-apiece.
Anuresh Chandra made the perfect debut for Park, with foursomes and singles wins.
PB (2) fill-in Glenn Morley also had a successful first Oligoi showing, sinking a 10-foot clutch putt on the 18th to halve the foursomes, then winning his singles.
PB (2) were on track for a narrow win only for Park’s Bo Huhu to come from 4-down with five holes to play to halve with Peter Stewart.
Round 2 is at Patutahi on Saturday.
The weather gods put paid to Mahia hosting the first round of the Endeavour men’s pennants on Saturday.
Rain saturated the course, including multiple flooded greens, and the round was called off.
Round 2 is at Tolaga Bay on Saturday.
