“Kaiya has made a brilliant return to the sport after a head injury and was on fire, doing a big degree of difficulty on tramp. He’s got all his confidence back and will have a good shot at qualifying for the worlds on the double mini tramp this weekend.”
James van Aswegen made a winning comeback after taking one and a half years off. He won gold on tramp, double mini and, with Zhi Botton, synchronised in the 13-14yr class.
“James wanted a break and has come back refreshed; his form and height on the mats were very impressive,” Callahan said.
Raine Lamont-Milner, Riker Rolls, Ngature Tuhuri and Mia Blot-Mouterde each won two gold medals.
Raine was first on tramp and double mini in the youth international (10-12yr) division.
Riker won gold on 10-and-under tramp and, with Parker Anderson, the synchronised, and won silver in the double mini.
Ngature won gold on double mini and silver on tramp in the 10-and-under category, then teamed with Ariki Campbell to take silver in the 11-12yr synchro.
Mia’s gold medals came on 10-and-under double mini and, with Lily Arnold, on synchro.
Mia also won bronze on the tramp.
Liam Walters and Hugo Emery won gold on synchronised in the 11-12yr class.
“It was the first time on our new air floor for the tumblers and they added another two gold medals to the tally,” Callahan said.
“Everyone who competed — and there were clubs from all over the North Island and one from Christchurch — was eligible to win medals and qualify for the national champs and world champs.
“First-time tumbler Amy Baldacchino won gold in the 17-and-over women’s division and Baylee Crago won gold in the 17-and-over men’s contest.
“Lauren Chambers and Ralo Bright were second in the youth international women and 10-and-under girls respectively.
“Tumbling is a part of the club we are hoping will attract new members.”
Callahan said the champs attracted 167 competitiors with “positive feedback from everyone”.
“Our next competition is in six weeks at Rotorua, for the Mid Island Champs, and then we have a competition in Auckland in August before the national champs in Tauranga in September.
“We’ve got 14 who have qualified for the nationals and I’m expecting a few more to qualify.”
