Folks, we’re just past the first quarter of the grading round and two teams remain unbeaten — Brian Leach’s Cossy Done & Dusted and Nigel Higham’s Roseland Tavern.

Although this top-of-the-table situation is unlikely to change next week, the same cannot be said of the five teams currently with one loss.

It’s all on the Gisborne Club Darts Association website — www.sporty.co.nz/gcda

Gary Harding’s Cossy B Coz hosted the friendly faced but deadly 2NZ Corys 6-Shooters. Ramrodded by Alf Cross, this outfit had but one thing on their mind. Avoiding a repeat of last week’s 13-2 goring at the 2NZEF Bullring.

After a fairly even pairs round, the 6-Shooter three amigos — Glenn Higgins, Rio Edwards and Alf Cross — secured the unassailable eight wins. Craig Watson at anchor, improved the final outcome . . . 9-6 to the visitors.

At point, B Coz fielded their newest and youngest recruit, Nikki Stairs. Nikki is reputed to have thrown her first darts just six weeks ago. In her debut with her beau, Ryan Kirkland, she whacked a 120 and a 140 while helping take a brace of pair wins. The first was against 6-Shooters’ mid-pairing of Cross and Amanda Mathers, and the second was against the anchor pair of Dean Allen and Craig Watson.

Kerry Hopper and Gary Harding, at anchor, doubled B Coz’s score with victories over Dean Allen and Watson, and a close one, 2-1, over Higgins and Edwards.

The experienced Heather and Keith Hannam had an off-night and were unable to add to B Coz’s pairs tally.

For the hosts, the vanguard of Higgins and Edwards were successful with two from three, beating Hannam and Hannam, as well as Hopper and Harding.

The 6-Shooters’ mid-pairing of Cross and Mathers also won two, first against Keith and Heather Hannam, and then against Hopper and Harding, denying them a hat-trick. Allen and Watson added one more win to give the 6-Shooters a 5-4 lead at the turn.

All hopes of a B Coz comeback were soon dashed. First, Kirkland was denied victory in a close-fought duel with Higgins, who won the race to plug the winning double. This left Nikki Stairs and Heather Hannam to perform miracles against the tried and tested Rio Edwards and Alf Cross to give B Coz a fighting chance. Alas, it was not to be.

Keith Hannam and Hopper took consolation wins from Mathers and Allen, but it was a case of too little too late.
