Darts by Tutu Wynn

Darts by Tutu Wynn

Greetings and salutations to our Tairawhiti dart enthusiasts. Tutu’s come out of retirement to give you some weekly updates on the local GCDA and club darts scene.

President Ian Wood, not as youthful as he once was, expressed a keenness to encourage participation and fairness in all aspects of GCDA competition so that players, regardless of calibre, get to enjoy the camaraderie and strengthen the friendships within the membership.

For many, 2018 began doubtfully, with claims made by many players, “My darts are a bit rusty”. For me it’s more of an “Ah! I don’t enjoy losing” thing, because in this day and age, tungsten and titanium are not likely to rust. The good thing about it, though — they came, they played and enjoyed playing.

An obvious feature among this year’s 16 teams, was the early opportunity taken by players to choose who they were happiest to play with and make it happen.

2NZEF Say My Name, skippered by Webster Lewis and comprising Tiniroto whanau, are an example. He has daughter Justice (17), father-and-son duo Tui Duncan (ex-2NZ Bullz) and Thao Duncan (ex-2NZ RUNVS), and proven exponent Kayne Arahanga to make up the tight five. Without his sixth player, son Crevice, Webster’s Say My Name managed an impressive 11-4 win against Leah Monika’s 2NZEF McCann’ics.

Conversely, 2NZEF Titans are spoiled for choice. They boast 11 players. Among them are Region 7 men’s reps Cris Kiri, Corey Kaio and Brendon Barry, and women’s reps Lorna Wynyard, Tania Kiri and Syndi Barbarich. Outstanding national juniors Te Kotahi Kaio and his brother Ihaka Kaio-Wynyard are also in the mix.

Titans’ experience and late-summer preparation showed in their 12-3 victory over clubmates 2NZEF Cory 6-Shooters.

With five teams now playing out of Gisborne’s Cosmopolitan Club, the boards there will no doubt wear out a little faster. The newest arrivals, the Cossy Shakers, are made up of newcomers to GCDA. Local whanau make up the numbers — Isaiah Leach (21), acting captain Kauri Leach (22), Levi Tamihana (23) and Rihara Moeke (23). Also in the ranks are Nick Puttick, Aubrey Ormond and regular skipper John Love.

Shakers’ introduction to GCDA was a steep learning curve. They came face to face with back-to-back champions and were brave in a 12-3 loss to the clinical Cossy DONE & Dusted.

In an exclusive with Tutu, DONE & Dusted captain Brian Leach gave assurances the Shakers were not a team to be taken likely, so watch this space, folks.

After folding following the 2016 season, Cossy (4) resurrected themselves. Now, with very much the same faces, they have a different name, B Coz. Among them is a player of many nights, Lindsay Grenfell. Also back in the team are Heather and Keith Hannam, back from a three-year stint in the Hutt Valley. Ryan Kirkland, Kerry Hopper and captain Gary Harding make up the six.

Many third-leg deciders did not go B Coz’s way in their 12-3 loss to hosts 2NZEF Bullz. The scoreline flattered the back-to-back GCDA runners-up.

It was a memorable and enjoyable opening night of darts. The ton-plus scores came slowly, the doubles were in many instances a lottery, and we saw some unexpected come-from-behind finishes.

The final scorelines may have averaged 12-3, but when they look back on it, many of the victorious teams will admit to just being happy to go home with a first-up win.
